Chapter 9 - The Ledger Cleared

Three days later.
The morning sun broke over Manhattan, washing the city in brilliant, crystal-clear light.
The news outlets were filled with reports of the sudden, total collapse of the Mercer Development Corporation due to massive federal tax fraud and offshore insolvency. Adrian Mercer and Derek Shaw were officially reported by police as missing fugitives, believed to have fled the country to avoid federal prosecution.
In reality, their names had been quietly erased from the city’s records forever.
At the Valenti Development headquarters in Midtown, the atmosphere was calm, professional, and buzzing with productive energy.
Elena sat in her spacious corner office on the top floor, wearing a stunning burgundy silk dress. On her desk sat a fresh cup of steaming coffee and a single, long-stemmed red rose in a crystal vase.
A quiet knock sounded at her door, and Luca stepped inside.
He wore a dark blue suit, looking every bit the legitimate, powerful real estate tycoon. But the look in his eyes when he saw her was filled with a warmth reserved for her alone.
“The federal auditors just left,” Luca said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. “They signed off on the complete acquisition of Mercer’s Brooklyn docks. Valenti Development now officially owns seventy percent of the eastern waterfront.”
Elena smiled, leaning back in her leather chair. “I know. I received the official confirmation ten minutes ago. Our stock value rose fourteen percent at the opening bell.”
Luca walked around the desk, leaning against the edge beside her chair. He reached out, gently twirling a lock of her dark hair around his finger.
“You performed a miracle, Elena,” Luca said softly. “You turned a night of horrific violence into the greatest business victory this family has seen in twenty years.”
“We did it together, Luca,” Elena replied, reaching up to lay her hand over his. “You protected my family. You gave me the space to fight.”
Luca looked down at her, his expression turning serious, his dark eyes filled with deep sincerity.
“Caroline and Leo returned to Park Slope yesterday,” Luca said. “I’ve assigned two permanent, discreet bodyguards to watch their brownstone. They will never be in danger again, Elena. I give you my word.”
Elena felt a lump form in her throat. She stood up from her chair, stepping close to him, resting her hands against his chest.
“I know,” she whispered softly. “I trust you with my life, Luca. I trust you with everything.”
Luca reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. “Luca... what is that?”
Luca opened the box, revealing a breathtaking ring made of platinum, set with a flawless, emerald-cut diamond that caught the sunlight pouring through the window.
“This belonged to my grandmother,” Luca said softly, his voice trembling slightly—a rare, incredible sight for the most feared man in the city. “She gave it to my father, and told him to give it to the woman who would make him a better man.”
He looked into Elena’s dark eyes, his soul exposed before her.
“I was a man who lived in the dark, Elena. I believed violence was the only way to hold power. But you showed me another way. You showed me intelligence, grace, and a courage that rivals any soldier I’ve ever known.”
He dropped to one knee before her—not in the blood of his bedroom, but in the brilliant sunlight of her office.
“Elena Russo,” Luca said, his voice raw with love. “Will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the queen of everything I build?”
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness overflowed from Elena’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes!” Elena cried softly, dropping to her knees beside him on the plush carpet. “Yes, Luca! Absolutely yes!”
Luca smiled—a radiant, joyous expression—and slipped the ring onto her finger before pulling her into his arms and kissing her passionately.
