Chapter 4 - The Traitor in the Library

At 2:30 in the morning, the library of the Valenti estate was illuminated only by the crackling fire in the hearth.
Victor Vance sat in a high-backed leather chair, a cup of untasted tea resting on the table beside him. He was pale, sweating profusely despite the cool air of the room, his eyes darting toward every shadow. Two of Luca’s guards stood silently beside the heavy mahogany doors.
The doors opened, and Elena walked in.
She walked with a quiet, deliberate grace, carrying a blue leather folder. She did not look angry; she looked utterly detached, an auditor preparing to review a routine tax return.
“Elena!” Victor gasped, scrambling out of his chair. “Thank God. They brought me here in the middle of the night—they wouldn't tell me what’s going on! Is everything okay at the gala?”
Elena walked past him and sat behind the large carved desk. She opened the folder, smoothing down a sheet of paper.
“Sit down, Victor,” she said gently.
Victor hesitated, then collapsed back into the chair, his hands shaking. “Elena, what is this?”
“Four months ago,” Elena began, her voice calm and conversational, “your mother’s medical bills at Mount Sinai were cleared. A wire transfer of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars came from a shell corporation called Blue Horizon LLC.”
Victor went rigid. “I... I told you my uncle helped with that.”
“Your uncle works as a mechanic in New Jersey, Victor,” Elena said smoothly. “Blue Horizon LLC is registered to Adrian Mercer’s primary legal counsel in Brooklyn.”
Victor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
“You didn't just accept money for your mother’s treatment,” Elena continued, looking up from the folder with eyes that were cold and unyielding. “You gave Mercer access to our internal file tracking system. You alerted Shaw when I decided to leave the ballroom alone tonight.”
“Elena, please!” Victor fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face, echoing the position Luca had taken before Elena hours earlier—but without any of the dignity. “He said he would stop my mother’s treatments! He said he would tell the hospital the initial payments were fraudulent and have her evicted from the care facility!”
Elena looked at the young man she had protected. A small part of her heart ached for him, but the memory of Derek Shaw’s hands around her neck wiped away any lingering sympathy.
“Mercer lied to you, Victor,” Elena said softly. “He didn't need to threaten your mother. He paid off her doctor two weeks after you signed his agreement. He was using her to keep you on a leash.”
Victor buried his face in his hands, weeping uncontrollably. “I’m sorry... I’m so sorry... Is Shaw coming for me now? What is Mr. Valenti going to do to me?”
The heavy doors opened behind them. Luca stepped into the library, his tall frame cutting through the firelight like a shadow made manifest.
“Mr. Valenti won't do anything to you,” Luca said, his voice deep and resonance filling the room. “Because Miss Russo has decided your fate.”
Victor looked up at Elena, pleading with his eyes.
Elena closed the folder with a quiet thud.
“You are going to sit at that computer, Victor,” Elena said, pointing to the laptop on the desk. “You are going to log into Mercer’s secure portal using the credentials he gave you. And you are going to upload a altered set of Valenti Development ledgers that I personally prepared an hour ago.”
Victor blinked, wiping his eyes. “A... altered set?”
“Ledgers that show Valenti Development is acquiring Mercer’s debt from the Chicago syndicate,” Elena explained, a brilliant, terrifying smile touching her lips. “When Mercer logs in tomorrow morning, he will see that I have legally seized every single one of his assets in exchange for paying off his forty-million-dollar loan. He won't own his docks, his construction firms, or his house.”
Victor stared at her in absolute awe. “You... you bankrupt him from a computer?”
“I am an accountant, Victor,” Elena said softly, leaning forward across the desk. “I don't need a gun to destroy a man. I just need his numbers.”
She turned her gaze to Luca, who stood near the fireplace, watching her with an expression of unadulterated admiration.
“And as for you, Victor,” Elena added, looking back at the kneeling young man. “Once the upload is complete, Dante will take you to the airport. You will leave New York tonight. You will never return, and you will never speak my name again. If you do... Luca won't send an accountant.”
Victor nodded frantically, scrambling toward the computer. “Yes! Thank you! Thank you, Elena!”
Luca stepped closer to Elena, resting his hand lightly on the back of her chair. He leaned down, his breath warm against her ear.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side, Miss Russo,” Luca whispered softly.
Elena looked up into his dark eyes, her pulse racing. “You’re safe, Luca. As long as your books stay balanced.”
