Chapter 10 - Forever Home

One year later.
A gentle autumn rain tapped softly against the high glass windows of the master bedroom suite.
Inside, a warm fire crackled merrily in the large stone fireplace, casting golden, dancing light across the plush velvet rug and mahogany furniture.
I lay on the comfortable sofa near the hearth, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, resting my head against Luca's chest. His broad arm was wrapped securely around me, his warm fingers gently stroking my arm.
On the wall above the fireplace hung two portraits side-by-side: the restored painting of Sofia Moretti, and beside it, a beautiful new oil portrait of Luca and me on our wedding day, smiling brightly under the garden arches.
“What are you thinking about, my love?” Luca asked softly, kissing the top of my head.
I looked down at my hand resting on his chest. The thin white scar on my palm was barely visible now, completely covered by the sparkling diamond wedding band that shone in the firelight.
“I was thinking about that night in the foyer,” I smiled quietly, looking up into his warm hazel eyes. “When I was kneeling on the cold floor, trying to fix a dress, terrified I was going to lose everything.”
Luca reached down, bringing my hand to his lips, kissing the pale scar on my palm with tender, reverence.
“That burn was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen,” Luca whispered softly. “You saved my mother’s memory, Emma. And in doing so, you saved me.”
I smiled, turning in his arms and wrapping my hands around his neck, looking into the face of the man who had become my shelter, my strength, and my home.
“We saved each other, Luca,” I whispered.

He leaned down, pressing his lips to mine in a slow, deep, passionate kiss that filled the warm room with an eternal promise.
Outside, the rain fell gently over the city of Chicago, but inside the Moretti estate, the fire burned bright, warm, and everlasting.
