Chapter 6 - The Confession

By 8:00 AM, the storm had cleared, leaving a crisp, pale morning light reflecting over Lake Michigan.

Inside the private medical wing of the Moretti estate, Nurse Clara Higgins sat in a leather armchair, drinking hot tea. Her hands were shaking violently as she looked up at Luca, who sat across from her on the edge of the mahogany desk. I sat beside him, my freshly dressed hand resting on a soft velvet cushion.

Daniel stood by the closed door with two local detectives from the Chicago Police Department who had been brought in personally by Luca's high-level legal team.

“Tell them what you told me at the pier, Nurse Higgins,” Luca said softly, his voice firm but devoid of cruelty toward the trembling old woman.

Nurse Higgins swallowed hard, wiping a tear from her eye. “I... I was deep in debt, Mr. Moretti. My son was facing foreclosure on his home. Three weeks before your mother passed, Arthur Bellini approached me at the hospital.”

The detectives took notes rapidly on their pads.

“He offered me fifty thousand dollars,” Higgins continued, her voice cracking. “All I had to do was swap Mrs. Moretti’s daily IV medication with a concentrated potassium chloride solution on the night of August 11th. It would induce a fatal cardiac arrest that would look entirely natural on an autopsy report for a woman in her weakened condition.”

Luca’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek, but he remained silent, letting the truth flow into the official record.

“And Miss Bellini?” the lead detective asked. “What was her role?”

“Vanessa was the controller,” Higgins sobbed, covering her face. “She made sure no family members were in the room during the late shifts. She intercepted all of Mrs. Sofia’s handwritten notes. The night before she died, Mrs. Sofia realized what was happening... she caught me changing the IV bag. She tried to hit the emergency call button, but Vanessa pulled the cord out from the wall!”

I gasped, tears of horror spilling from my eyes.

“Mrs. Sofia managed to hide one last letter under her mattress before I administered the dose,” Higgins confessed, weeping openly now. “Vanessa found it yesterday when she was clearing out the bedroom... that’s why she tried to burn it.”

The lead detective shut his notebook with a heavy snap. “That is more than enough for a double capital murder indictment against Arthur and Vanessa Bellini.”

He turned to Luca. “Mr. Moretti, federal marshals are executing an arrest warrant at Arthur Bellini’s Lake Forest estate right now. Vanessa Bellini is already in custody at the 1st District Precinct.”

“Thank you, Detective,” Luca said quietly.

The officers led Nurse Higgins out of the room to process her formal statement at the station.

The room went dead silent once more.

Luca sat motionless on the edge of his desk, staring down at his hands. The weight of seven months of false guilt, anger, and grief seemed to lift from his shoulders, leaving him looking exhausted and deeply human.

I stood up slowly from my chair, stepping closer to him.

“Luca...” I whispered softly.

He looked up at me. Without saying a word, he reached out, wrapped his arms around my waist, and buried his face into my stomach.

I wrapped my arms around his head and shoulders, gently running my fingers through his dark hair as he let out a quiet, shuddering breath, holding onto me like a man who had finally reached the shore after surviving a shipwreck.
