Chapter 5 - Confrontation in the Rain

“Did you really think Luca could protect you, Emma?” Vanessa sneered, stepping through the mud toward me, her designer coat soaked at the hem.
Two large, rough-looking men stepped up behind her, holding heavy iron pipes.
I backed up until my shoulders hit the cold corrugated steel of a shipping container. My bandaged hand throbbed painfully in the cold wet air, but I forced myself to stand tall.
“Luca knows everything, Vanessa,” I spat out over the sound of the howling wind. “He knows about the letters. He knows about Nurse Higgins. It's over!”
Vanessa’s face twisted into an ugly, psychotic grimace. “It’s only over when I say it’s over! My father controls this pier! Luca walked right into an ambush inside that warehouse!”
She took three steps forward, pointing the silver revolver directly at my forehead.
“You pathetic little servant,” Vanessa hissed, her eyes wild with murderous desperation. “If you had just let that letter burn in the fireplace, you would have received a nice severance check and lived your miserable life. Now, you’re going to drown in Lake Michigan alongside that old nurse!”
“Put the gun down, Vanessa.”
A voice cut through the storm like a thunderbolt.
Vanessa froze.
From the dark alleyway between two shipping containers stepped Luca Moretti. His suit was soaked with rain, his black hair plastered across his forehead, and his gun was aimed squarely at Vanessa’s heart.
Behind him, Daniel dragged two bloody, unconscious Bellini guards, dropping them like trash onto the wet pavement.
“Luca!” Vanessa gasped, taking a step back, her hands trembling as she held the revolver. “How... how did you—”
“Your father’s men were sloppy, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped between her and me, shielding me completely with his broad frame. “They took Arthur’s money, but they lacked the loyalty to die for him. Nurse Higgins is already secured in my vehicle.”
Vanessa’s eyes went wide with sheer horror. “No... no...”
“It's over, Vanessa,” Luca said, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. “Nurse Higgins gave a full signed confession three minutes ago. She recorded every instruction your father gave her the night my mother died.”
Vanessa lowered her gun slightly, tears of rage mixing with the rain on her cheeks. “She was an old woman, Luca! She was going to ruin everything! She was going to give the docks to a charity! My family spent thirty years building this shipping network!”
“Your family murdered my mother!” Luca roared, his voice shaking the very steel containers around us.
The sheer power of his rage sent Vanessa stumbling back. She looked around wildly, realizing her father’s guards were gone, her escape route blocked, and the man she tried to force into marriage was now her executioner.
In a fit of hysterical panic, Vanessa raised her revolver again—not at Luca, but at me!
BANG!
A gunshot cracked through the rainy night air.
Vanessa gasped, dropping her gun into the mud as a bullet hit the ground right at her feet. Luca had fired a warning shot, his eyes burning with a lethal threat.
“Drop the weapon, Vanessa,” Luca commanded coldly. “Or the next bullet won't hit the pavement.”
Vanessa sank to her knees in the mud, sobbing uncontrollably, her expensive clothes ruined, her arrogance entirely destroyed.
Daniel stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
Luca didn't look at her again. He turned around instantly, reaching out and pulling me into his chest, wrapping his heavy arms around me tightly.
“Are you hurt, Emma?” he asked, his voice rough and breathless against my hair.
May you like
“I’m okay, Luca...” I sobbed with relief, wrapping my uninjured arm around his waist, resting my head against his rain-soaked chest. “I’m okay.”
He held me tight in the freezing storm, his heart beating fast and strong against mine, holding me like I was the most precious thing in the world.
