Chapter 8 - The Shift of Power

Six months later.

The high-ceilinged boardroom of Moretti Shipping Enterprises overlooked the vast, blue expanse of Lake Michigan.

At the head of the long mahogany conference table sat Luca Moretti, wearing a sharp, dark suit. To his right sat his legal team, and to his left sat the newly appointed Board of Trustees.

And sitting right beside Luca, holding a leather folder, was me.

Over the past six months, under Luca's personal guidance, I had enrolled in business administration classes and taken over the management of the Sofia Moretti Memorial Foundation—the non-profit organization funded by the fifty-one percent controlling shares of the shipping company that Sofia had wanted to protect.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom opened.

Two bailiffs escorted Vanessa Bellini into the room, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a plain ponytail, her hands cuffed at her waist. She was serving a life sentence without parole following her conviction three months prior.

She was brought in to sign the final court-ordered forfeiture of all Bellini family assets back to the Moretti estate.

Vanessa looked up, her bloodshot eyes landing on me sitting beside Luca, wearing a tailored cream blazer, the silver lily locket glowing against my neck.

Vanessa’s jaw trembled with pure, bitter rage. “You...” she spat out, her voice raspy. “You stole my life, you pathetic maid.”

Luca stood up slowly, leaning his hands on the table, his presence commanding the entire room.

“Emma didn't steal anything, Vanessa,” Luca said coldly. “She earned respect, honor, and love through her truth. Things you and your father could never buy with all the money in Chicago.”

The bailiff pressed the document down in front of Vanessa. “Sign the release, Miss Bellini.”

Vanessa’s trembling, cuffed hands picked up the pen. She signed her name with a bitter, ragged scrawl, officially stripping her family of every last dime and contract they had ever held in the city.

She was led out of the room, her heavy boots dragging against the floor, disappearing forever into the dark shadows of the penal system.

The board members applauded quietly as the documents were finalized.

Luca turned to me, offering his hand. I took it, standing up beside him.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Luca announced to the board, his arm sliding around my waist, holding me proud and secure. “I would like to introduce the new Executive Chairwoman of the Sofia Moretti Foundation—Emma Reed.”

I looked out at the room, holding my head high, no longer the frightened girl kneeling in the mud, but a strong, proud woman standing side-by-side with the man she loved.
