Chapter 5 - The Innocent Shield

With Julian secured in the basement, the immediate panic within the estate began to settle into a cold, tactical reality.
Vincent returned to his main office, accompanied only by Derek and Hannah. The security shutters remained closed, locking the room in an artificial night lit only by the warm glow of the desk lamps.
Hannah sat on the velvet sofa, holding Lily in her lap. The little girl was growing sleepy again, her small head resting heavy against her mother’s shoulder, though her hands still clutched the small wooden rabbit she had brought from home.
"Mr. Caruso," Hannah said quietly, watching him inspect the safe beneath his desk. "What happens to us now? Are we allowed to leave?"
Vincent finished securing the steel door of the safe, turning the mechanical dial until it clicked into place. He stood up, smoothing his tailored vest, and looked at her.
"No one leaves tonight, Hannah," Vincent said. "Not because I suspect you, but because the Morettis have eyes on every road leading out of this valley. If they see a staff car leaving the gates, they’ll know the operation went wrong."
"I... I understand," Hannah whispered, lowering her head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought her to work tonight. If I had just stayed home..."
"If you had stayed home," Vincent interrupted, his tone remarkably gentle, "Julian would have handed my ledger to Sal Moretti two hours ago. By midnight, my brothers would have been arrested, my shipping lines seized, and a hit team would be sitting outside my front gates."
He walked over to the sofa and knelt in front of little Lily.
The powerful mafia boss—a man whose name made hardened criminals tremble across three states—reached out with two fingers and lightly tapped the little girl’s small nose. Lily let out a soft, sleepy giggle, squirming deeper into her mother’s arms.
"Your daughter saved my life tonight, Hannah," Vincent said softly, his dark eyes meeting Hannah’s. "Carusos do not forget a debt. Ever."
"Boss!" Derek called out from the doorway, holding a secure satellite phone. "We’ve intercepted a encrypted transmission coming from a vehicle parked two miles down the ridge. It’s Sal Moretti’s chief enforcer, Frankie 'The Hammer' Varga. He’s waiting for Julian’s signal."
Vincent’s demeanor changed instantly. The softness evaporated, replaced by the lethal, calculating mind of a syndicate boss. He stood up, stepping away from the sofa.
"Is he alone?" Vincent asked.
"Two cars," Derek reported, looking at a tablet displaying infrared satellite footage. "Six men total. Heavy weapons. They’re sitting on the access road, waiting for Julian to bring them the ledger."
Vincent looked back at the small black book sitting on his desk.
"Frankie thinks he’s picking up a book," Vincent murmured, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face. "Let’s give him a delivery he’ll never forget."
He turned to Hannah. "Derek will take you and Lily to my private quarters upstairs. It has reinforced steel doors and its own security system. You will stay there until I personally come back to open the door. Do you understand?"
May you like
Hannah looked into his eyes and saw no threat to her child—only an immovable shield. "Yes, Mr. Caruso. I understand."
"Good," Vincent said. He turned to Derek. "Assemble the strike team. Eight men. We’re going to answer Mr. Varga’s call."
