Chapter 10 - The Secret Kept

Two weeks later, the Caruso estate had returned to its flawless, quiet rhythm, though the energy within its high stone walls was fundamentally transformed.

The high security remained—armed men still patrolled the perimeter gates, and infrared cameras monitored every corner of the property—but the oppressive, cold silence that had dominated the mansion for years was gone.

In the central courtyard, children's toys now sat near the marble fountain. A small wooden swing set had been installed beneath the large oak trees near the guest house, and the sound of Lily’s happy laughter often drifted through the open windows of Vincent’s second-floor study.

Inside the study, Vincent sat behind his heavy walnut desk, reviewing financial reports from his legitimate business holdings across the country.

The floor panel beneath his desk was securely closed, the mechanical lock reset with a new, complex combination known only to him.

A knock sounded on the door.

"Come in," Vincent called out.

Hannah stepped into the room, holding a folder of daily schedules and staff assignments. She looked healthy, elegant, and entirely at ease, the worn-out, exhausted look she had carried for years completely erased from her features.

"Morning, Mr. Caruso," Hannah said, setting the folder on his desk. "The new security team for the east gate has arrived and passed Derek’s inspection. And the kitchen staff wanted to know if you'll be having dinner in the main dining room tonight."

"I will," Vincent replied, signing a paper in front of him. "And please ensure there are two extra places set. You and Lily will be joining me."

Hannah smiled, her eyes warm. "We'd be honored."

She turned to leave, but then paused, looking down at the edge of his desk where the hidden compartment was located.

"Mr. Caruso," Hannah asked softly, curiosity finally getting the better of her. "Can I ask you something?"

Vincent looked up, resting his chin on his hands. "Anything, Hannah."

"That ledger..." she whispered, stepping a little closer. "The book Lily found that night. What was really in it?"

Vincent stared at her for a long moment. Then, slowly, he pulled open his top desk drawer, reached inside, and pulled out the thin black book.

He laid it flat on the desk between them.

"Everyone in my world thinks this book contains a list of my enemies, my bribe payments, and my criminal assets," Vincent said softly.

He opened the cover, flipping past the first few pages, which were indeed covered in dense, encrypted numbers and codes. Then he flipped to the very back of the book—to a set of pages that were entirely separate from the rest.

Hannah leaned forward, looking down at the handwritten text.

It wasn't a list of debts or crimes.

It was a list of names—hundreds of names—accompanied by dates, amounts, and locations. St. Jude’s Children's Hospital: $500,000. Denver Orphanage Fund: $1,200,000. Colorado Working Mothers Assistance: $800,000.

Hannah gasped, looking up at him in complete shock. "You... you’ve been anonymously funding charities across the state for ten years?"

"If my associates found out I was giving away millions of dollars to help families and children, they would think I had gone soft," Vincent said, a faint, sad smile touching his lips. "And if my enemies found out, they would use those institutions against me. This book doesn't just protect my empire, Hannah. It protects the only good thing I’ve ever done with the money I’ve made."

Hannah looked at the book, then at the powerful man sitting before her.

"Your secret is safe with us, Mr. Caruso," Hannah said, her voice rich with deep, absolute sincerity.
