Chapter 6 - The Setup

At ten-thirty PM, the dense pine forests surrounding the Caruso estate were pitch-black and freezing cold. Snow had begun to fall in thin, sharp needles, whistling through the high branches of the mountain road.
Two miles down the winding asphalt, parked in a darkened turnout beneath the shadow of a rock cliff, sat two black SUVs. Inside the lead vehicle, Frankie Varga leaned against the steering wheel, chewing on a tooth-pick, his eyes fixed on the digital clock on the dashboard.
"Where the hell is the old man?" Frankie growled, spitting his toothpick onto the floor mat. "He was supposed to ping us thirty minutes ago."
"Maybe he got caught, Boss," the driver suggested nervously, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. "Caruso’s estate is a fortress. If Julian tripped an alarm—"
"Julian is a cowardly old butler," Frankie snorted, pulling a heavy silver pistol from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine. "He wants his son alive. He’ll get that book out if he has to crawl through the sewer pipes."
Suddenly, the headlights of an approaching vehicle cut through the swirling snow.
A dark silver sedan wound its way down the mountain road, its high beams flashing twice before it pulled into the turnout, stopping ten yards in front of Frankie’s SUV.
Frankie’s eyes narrowed. "That’s Caruso’s private staff car."
He gestured to his men. "Stay sharp. Keep your iron ready, but let me talk first. If he’s got the ledger, we take it and wipe him out."
Frankie stepped out into the freezing night air, his heavy leather coat flapping in the wind. The passenger door of the silver sedan opened slowly, and a man stepped out into the snow, holding a thick leather briefcase under his arm.
He wore a dark coat with the collar turned up against the cold, his face obscured by the falling snow and the glare of the headlights.
"Julian?" Frankie called out, stepping closer, his hand resting on the grip of his weapon. "You’re late, old man. Did you get it?"
The figure stopped five feet away.
"Julian couldn't make it tonight, Frankie," a deep, quiet voice echoed through the snowy clearing.
The man raised his head. The glare of the headlights caught the cold, dark eyes and razor-sharp jawline of Vincent Caruso.
Frankie’s breath caught in his throat, his heart slamming against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Caruso..."
Before Frankie could pull his gun, the shadows along the cliffside exploded into light.
Four heavy tactical vehicles rolled out from the treeline, their high-intensity floodlights blinding Frankie’s men. Dozens of armed Caruso guards stepped out from the brush, their rifles raised and aimed directly at the two SUVs.
"Drop your weapons!" Derek’s voice boomed through a loudspeaker, echoing off the rock walls. "Drop them now or we tear those cars to pieces!"
Frankie stood frozen in the middle of the snowy road, surrounded, outgunned, and completely trapped. The silver pistol slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the frozen asphalt.

Vincent walked slowly toward him, stepping over the dropped weapon, stopping inches from the terrified enforcer.
"Sal sent you to do a man's job, Frankie," Vincent said softly, his voice cutting through the freezing wind. "That was his first mistake."
