Chapter 8 - The Return of Peace

By midnight, the snow storm had buried the mountain roads under a thick, pristine blanket of white.
The estate gates swung open to allow Vincent’s convoy back onto the grounds, closing tightly behind them with a heavy, satisfying metallic thud. The security lights around the perimeter burned brightly, but the atmosphere within the compound had completely shifted. The immediate danger had passed, neutralized with the ruthless efficiency that had made Vincent Caruso an absolute legend in the underworld.
Vincent walked upstairs to his private living quarters on the third floor. He pressed his hand against the biometric scanner beside the reinforced door, unlocking the steel deadbolts with a soft hiss of pneumatic pressure.
Inside, the suite was warm and quietly lit by a marble fireplace.
Hannah Bennett sat on the sofa, her arms wrapped around a sleeping Lily. She looked up instantly as the door opened, her eyes searching Vincent’s face for any sign of bad news.
"Is it over?" Hannah asked in a hushed whisper.
Vincent removed his dark coat, hanging it over a wooden chair. "It’s over," he said gently. "The threat has been dealt with. The Morettis will never come near this family or this property again."
Hannah let out a long, shuddering breath, pressing her forehead against her daughter’s soft hair as tears of pure relief filled her eyes. "Thank God... thank God."
Vincent walked over and sat down in the armchair across from them. He looked at the little girl, who was fast asleep, still holding her wooden rabbit, her small face completely at peace.
"And Julian?" Hannah asked softly, looking up. "What will happen to him?"
Vincent stared into the flickering flames of the fireplace for a moment before answering. "Julian betrayed this house. In my world, that usually carries a sentence from which no one returns."
Hannah swallowed hard, her heart sinking. "He was desperate, Mr. Caruso. He was trying to save his son."
"I know," Vincent said softly. "Which is why he is not dead. I am sending him and his son to a small farm I own in Costa Rica. He will never set foot in the United States again, and he will never work for me again. But he will live."
Hannah looked at the mob boss with a mixture of awe and deep respect. Behind the fearsome reputation and the iron control, she saw a man who possessed a strict, unyielding sense of honor—a man who understood the lengths a parent would go to protect their child.

"You are a good man, Mr. Caruso," Hannah said quietly. "No matter what people say about you."
Vincent let out a short, sad laugh, shaking his head. "Don't go spreading that rumor, Hannah. It’s bad for business."
