Chapter 5 - THE STORM OVER BOSTON

The execution of Marcus Blackwood sent violent shockwaves through the Boston underworld within hours.

By mid-afternoon, the remaining capos had sworn absolute, terrified allegiance to Lucas, turning over every ledger, every secret communication, and every contact linked to Marcus’s secret alliance with the O'Sullivan family.

The truth was laid bare on Lucas’s desk before nightfall:

The O'Sullivans had used Marcus to weaken the Blackwood syndicate from within, planning a full-scale assault once Lucas was dead. Now that Marcus was gone, the O'Sullivan patriarch, Cormac O'Sullivan, knew his time was running out. He was gathering all available muscle at his heavily fortified estate in the docks district for a desperate, final stand.

Inside the Blackwood Estate, the air was thick with tactical preparation.

Dozens of armored SUVs sat idling on the long driveway. Tactical teams in black body armor checked weapons, radios, and night-vision equipment in the lower garage.

In the second-floor nursery—a room that Harold had magically transformed in twelve hours into a paradise of plush toys, painted murals, and soft bookshelves—Emma was fast asleep in a white canopy bed, her velvet bear tucked tight under her chin.

Clara stood by the wide bay window, looking out at the army of men gathering on the lawn below.

The door creaked open, and Lucas stepped into the room.

He was wearing full black tactical gear beneath a heavy leather coat, a leather holster strapped across his broad chest holding two customized handguns. He looked terrifying, lethal, and imposing—the absolute manifestation of the underworld king.

Yet, as he looked at Clara standing by the window, his expression softened completely.

"She’s a heavy sleeper," Clara whispered, looking back at Emma.

"She deserves peaceful dreams," Lucas said, walking over to stand beside Clara at the window.

Clara looked at the weapons strapped across his chest, her eyes wide with worry. "You're going out there tonight, aren't you?"

"I have to finish it, Clara," Lucas said honestly. "Cormac O'Sullivan will never stop as long as he breathes. He hunted you six years ago, and he tried to take my life last week. I cannot leave a single shadow hanging over you or Emma."

Clara reached out, her cool fingers wrapping around the leather lapel of his tactical vest.

"I spent six years hating you, Lucas," she confessed, her voice shaking with quiet emotion. "I spent six years telling myself that you were a monster who didn't care about anything except power. But seeing you with Emma... seeing how you looked at her when she gave you that paper..."

Tears glittered in her blue-gray eyes as she looked up into his dark face.

"Don't die tonight," she begged softly. "Don't let her lose her father the day she finally found him."

Lucas reached up, his gloved hand gently cupping the back of her neck, pulling her close until his forehead rested against hers.

"I spent six years living in an empty castle, Clara," Lucas murmured against her lips, his breath warm and steady. "I didn't know what I was fighting for until a five-year-old girl in an oversized apron walked into my study. I am coming home to you. I swear it on my life."

He leaned down and pressed his lips against hers—a soft, deep, promise-filled kiss that washed away six years of pain, fear, and loneliness in a single, breathless second.

When he pulled back, Clara’s cheeks were flushed red, her hand resting over his heart, which was beating strong and steady beneath the tactical armor.

"Wait for me," Lucas whispered.

He turned and walked out of the room, his heavy boots echoing down the hallway as he headed down to war.
