Chapter 9 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

A year after the gala, the autumn leaves in Boston burned bright red and gold along Lake Shore Drive.

Life at the Blackwood Estate had reached a quiet, golden rhythm. The old underground turf wars had become distant history, replaced by corporate boardrooms, foundation galas, and school pickup schedules.

Yet, in a city as ancient and blood-soaked as Boston, the past never stays buried entirely.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Emma was at her private elementary school and Clara was attending a board meeting for the children's hospital, Vance walked into Lucas’s second-floor study holding an encrypted tactical tablet.

Lucas sat at his mahogany desk—the same desk where Emma had stood two years ago—reviewing blueprints for a new pediatric clinic in South Boston.

"Boss," Vance said quietly, closing the double doors behind him.

Lucas raised his eyes from the plans. "What is it, Vance?"

"We picked up a ping on the darknet registry twenty minutes ago," Vance revealed, setting the tablet on the desk. "A ten-million-dollar bounty was posted on your name three hours ago out of an offshore proxy account in Dublin."

Lucas stared at the screen. The name attached to the wire routing was familiar: The O'Sullivan Trust.

"Cormac’s youngest brother," Lucas said flatly, leaning back in his leather chair. "Liam O'Sullivan. The one who fled to Ireland ten years ago."

"Yes, Boss," Vance confirmed, his expression dark. "He’s gathered a crew of European mercenaries. They boarded a private charter out of London six hours ago. They land at Logan Airport at midnight."

Lucas didn't rage. He didn't jump up or shout. The ruthless, terrifying intelligence that had made him the king of Boston calculated every variable in a split second.

Two years ago, he would have mobilized forty tactical trucks, turned the airport into a war zone, and left bodies in the tarmac.

But he wasn't just a mob boss anymore.

He was a father.

And a husband.

"Do not tell Clara," Lucas commanded softly. "She has a presentation at the hospital at six. I want her day completely unbothered."

"What are your orders for Liam's team, Boss?" Vance asked, his hand resting on his sidearm.

Lucas stood up slowly, stepping over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out at the rain washing over his peaceful estate.

"Liam thinks he is coming to fight the old Lucas Blackwood," Lucas said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone. "He thinks I am still defending a territory."

He turned back to Vance, his dark eyes burning with an absolute, lethal clarity.

"Contact Federal Director Miller. Give him the flight manifests, the wire transactions, and the weapons manifests for Liam's charter plane. Tell him that if the FBI intercepts them on the tarmac before they touch Boston soil, I will transfer the deeds to the South End shipping yards directly to the municipal port authority."

Vance blinked in shock, then a slow, admiring smile spread across his face. "You're using the government to eliminate them legally?"

"Why spill blood on my driveway," Lucas asked smoothly, "when the federal government will lock them in a dark box forever for free?"

Four hours later, at 11:45 p.m., a sleek private jet touched down on a dark runway at Logan International Airport.

Before the cabin doors could open, six tactical FBI armored vehicles surrounded the aircraft with blinding floodlights! Fifty heavily armed federal marshals poured onto the tarmac, weapons drawn!

Liam O'Sullivan and his nine European mercenaries were forced out of the plane in handcuffs before their boots ever touched American dirt, charged with international terrorism, weapons trafficking, and conspiracy to commit murder.

In his study, Lucas watched the live encrypted feed of the arrest on his laptop screen while holding a glass of scotch.

He closed the laptop lid with a soft click.

The last shadow of his past had been erased—not with blood or violence, but with absolute, untouchable power.
