Chapter 8 - THE BLACKWOOD LEGACY

Six months later.
The grand ballroom of the Blackwood Estate was lit with thousands of twinkling fairy lights and crystal chandeliers, filled with hundreds of elegant guests in evening gowns and tuxedos.
It was not a mafia gathering.
It was the inaugural charity gala for the Emma Carter Foundation for Children and Families—a charitable organization created by Lucas to provide safe housing, medical care, and education for single mothers and children living in the poverty-stricken districts of Boston.
Local business leaders, city officials, artists, and reformed community figures gathered around silver platters of champagne and delicate hors d'oeuvres, admiring the grand renovation of the estate.
At the center of the ballroom, standing beneath the soaring ceiling, stood Clara.
She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown that sculpted her slender frame, her dark brown hair styled in soft, elegant waves over her shoulders. A delicate diamond necklace—a heirloom from Lucas’s grandmother—glimmered at her collarbone. She looked every inch the queen of the estate, radiant, confident, and deeply happy.
Beside her stood Lucas, immaculate in a black velvet tuxedo, holding a silver champagne glass in one hand while his other arm rested securely around Clara’s waist, pulling her close to his side.
"You look breathtaking tonight, Mrs. Blackwood," Lucas murmured into her ear, his lips brushing against her soft skin.
Clara blushed warmly, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. "We're not married yet, Mr. Blackwood."
Lucas pulled a small velvet box from his inner pocket, flipping the lid open with his thumb to reveal a massive, flawless five-carat oval diamond ring sparkling under the chandelier light.
"We will be by next month," Lucas smiled softly, taking her small hand and sliding the brilliant ring onto her finger. "Unless you're planning on running away again?"
Clara looked up into his dark, loving eyes, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it brought sweet tears to her eyes. She wrapped her hand over his, holding the ring tight against her chest.
"I am never leaving you again, Lucas," she swore softly. "You built a haven for us out of the storm."
Across the ballroom, Emma was running through the crowd in a white lace flower girl dress, holding hands with Harold, who was wearing a comical party hat and trying desperately to keep up with her energetic steps as she pointed at the giant chocolate fountain near the dessert table.
"Look at her," Clara whispered happily. "She’s so full of life."
"She saved me, Clara," Lucas said sincerely, looking at his daughter with endless pride. "She walked into my dark world with nothing but an apron and a piece of paper, and she turned me into a man worthy of being her father."
Capo Russo, now chief executive officer of the legitimate Blackwood Logistics Firm, walked up to them, holding a glass of wine and smiling warmly.
"Boss," Russo bowed his head respectfully to Lucas, then turned to Clara. "Mrs. Blackwood, the mayor has just arrived and would like to make the opening toast for the foundation."
Lucas looked at Clara, offering his arm with a charming, aristocrat smile. "Shall we, my love?"

"We shall, my king," Clara smiled, sliding her hand comfortably through his arm.
Together, they walked toward the grand stage, stepping forward out of the dark shadows of the past and into the warm, brilliant light of their future.
