Chapter 4 - Ricky the Hat

Fifteen minutes later, the iron gates at the front of the Rossi estate groaned open, allowing a battered black SUV to roll slowly up the winding, tree-lined driveway.

Inside the study, Leo didn't stand up. He simply pressed a button on his desk console, unlocking the front doors automatically.

A moment later, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed through the grand marble foyer. The office door opened, and Marco—Leo’s chief head of security, a massive man built like a brick wall with a shoulder holster visible under his jacket—stepped inside, holding the door open.

Behind Marco stumbled two men.

The first was Ricky "The Hat" Spataro, a short, greasy man in his late forties wearing a cheap leather jacket and a fedora that looked entirely out of place. His face was slick with cold sweat, his eyes darting frantically around the luxurious office as if searching for snipers hiding in the mahogany bookshelves.

Behind Ricky, supported entirely by Marco's strong grip, was Connor.

Tessa let out a sharp, heartbroken gasp, instantly standing up from her chair.

Connor looked terrible. His face was bruised, bloody, and grotesquely swollen. His right hand was wrapped in a bloody cloth, his broken fingers stiff and misaligned. He was shaking violently from pain and pure terror, his bloodshot eyes widening in complete shock when he spotted his sister standing in the center of the mob boss's private office.

"Tessa?" Connor croaked, his voice raw and raspy. "What... what are you doing here?"

"Quiet, Connor," Tessa whispered, tears streaming down her face as she instinctively took a step toward him, but Marco held the boy steady, keeping him near the doorway.

Leo Rossi didn't look up immediately. He slowly finished writing a note in blue ink, capped his pen with a soft click, and finally raised his dark, icy eyes to fix them on Ricky the Hat.

Ricky immediately took off his fedora, clutching it against his chest with trembling hands, bowing his head repeatedly. "Mr. Rossi! Sir! I am so sorry for the misunderstanding! Truly, sir! If we had known the kid was employed under your roof—"

"He isn't employed under my roof," Leo said smoothly, leaning back in his executive chair. "His sister is."

Ricky swallowed hard, glancing nervously at Tessa before looking back at Leo. "Right, right, sir! Of course! The debt is wiped, Mr. Rossi! Completely erased! Fifty thousand dollars—poof! Gone! Consider it a personal gift from me to you, sir!"

Leo raised an eyebrow, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips.

"A gift?" Leo asked softly, his tone laced with absolute venom. "You come into my home, after terrifying my staff, breaking bones on my territory without my permission, and you offer me a gift of fifty thousand dollars that was never yours to begin with?"

Ricky’s pale face turned entirely gray. "No, sir! I didn't mean—"

"Do you know what my time is worth, Ricky?" Leo interrupted, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his mahogany desk. "My time is worth considerably more than fifty thousand dollars. And tonight, you have wasted forty-five minutes of it."

Ricky began to shake violently, clutching his hat so hard the leather cracked. "Please, Mr. Rossi! Tell me how to make it right! Anything, sir! I'll pay a fine! I'll leave the city!"

Leo turned his head slowly to look at Tessa. "Tessa."

Tessa flinched slightly. "Yes, Mr. Rossi?"

"How much money do you currently have in your bank account?"

Tessa swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper. "Eight hundred and forty dollars, sir."

Leo looked back at Ricky. "You are going to take the eight hundred and forty dollars from her account to settle her brother's debt in full. You will sign a receipt stating the debt is paid in complete satisfaction."

Ricky nodded frantically. "Yes, sir! Absolutely, sir! Eight hundred dollars is perfect!"

"And then," Leo continued softly, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper, "you are going to personally pay for the finest orthopedic surgeon in Chicago to fix her brother's hand. If that boy loses the use of a single finger, Ricky, I will hand you over to Marco."

Marco let out a low, ominous grunt from the doorway, flexing his massive hands.

Ricky looked like he was about to faint. "I'll pay for the surgeon, Mr. Rossi! The best doctor in the state! I swear it!"

"Good," Leo said flatly. He gestured toward the door. "Now get out of my sight before I change my mind."

Ricky didn't wait for a second invitation. He practically sprinted out of the office, his heavy footsteps retreating wildly across the marble floor until the front doors slammed shut behind him.

Silence returned to the room, heavy and absolute.

Connor stood swaying near the door, clutching his mangled hand, staring at Leo with a mixture of profound awe and absolute terror.

Leo looked at Marco. "Take the boy to St. Anthony's Hospital. Have Dr. Vance look at his hand immediately. Send the entire bill to Ricky's business address."

"Right away, boss," Marco said smoothly, grabbing Connor's good shoulder and guiding the bewildered young man out into the hallway.

"Tessa!" Connor called out raspy as he was led away. "Tessa, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"

The door closed softly, leaving Tessa alone in the massive office with Leo Rossi once again.
