Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

By dawn, the siege of the Rossi estate was over.
The rain had stopped, leaving the sprawling grounds bathed in a cold, crisp morning fog. The bodies had been quietly cleared away by Marco’s cleanup crews, the broken glass swept from the foyer, and the damaged front gates reinforced with heavy tactical vehicles.
Inside the third-floor master suite, Tessa sat on the edge of Leo’s velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a steaming mug of tea between her hands.
Leo walked out of his dressing room, wearing a fresh, pristine dark suit. The cut on his jaw had been neatly bandaged. He walked over to where she sat and placed a thick, leather-bound document folder on the marble table before her.
Tessa looked up at him, puzzled. "What is this, Leo?"
"It is a legal trust," Leo explained smoothly, taking a seat beside her on the sofa. "Established in your name at a private bank in Zurich. It contains two million dollars, fully laundered, completely untraceable, along with two first-class plane tickets to London."
Tessa dropped her mug slightly, her eyes widening in shock. "What?"
"Sal Falcone is dead," Leo said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Marco executed him in his office an hour ago. But the syndicate war is going to escalate over the next few months as I absorb his territories. This estate is no longer safe for a civilian."
He reached out, covering her hands with his own.
"I want you to take your brother and go to Europe, Tessa," Leo said softly, his dark eyes filled with a rare, profound sadness. "Live a quiet, normal life. Buy a house. You don't belong in my dark world. You never did."
Tessa stared at the leather folder, her chest aching with a deep, crushing pain. Two months ago, she would have dropped to her knees and wept with gratitude for an offer like this—freedom, millions of dollars, and absolute safety for herself and Connor.
She looked from the folder up into Leo’s handsome, unreadable face.
She saw the cold, lonely isolation he lived in every single day. She saw the heavy burden of power that rested on his shoulders. And she realized that leaving him would shatter her heart far more than any threat from the underworld ever could.
Tessa slowly pushed the leather folder away, leaving it untouched on the table.
Leo frowned slightly. "Tessa..."
"No," Tessa said, her voice quiet, steady, and filled with unwavering conviction.
"No?" Leo repeated, bewildered. "Tessa, I am giving you complete freedom. You won't ever have to clean a floor, worry about money, or fear for your brother's safety again."
"I don't want freedom without you, Leo," Tessa said softly, reaching out to wrap her fingers tightly around his wrist. "I know who you are. I know what you do. I know the dark world you live in."
She looked straight into his dark eyes, refusing to back down.
"You protected me when I was nothing to you," Tessa continued, her voice rising with emotion. "You saved my brother. You kept me safe last night. You think I’m going to run away to Europe and leave you alone in this giant, empty house?"
Leo stared at her, completely stunned. For the first time since she had met him, the cold, invincible mob boss looked entirely speechless.
"I'm staying," Tessa declared firmly. "Not as your maid. Not as your steward. But as the woman who stands beside you."

Leo looked at her for a long, silent moment, his chest heaving. Then, a slow, breathtaking smile—a genuine, radiant smile—spread across his face.
He pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest, pressing his lips passionately to hers as the morning sun broke through the fog outside, illuminating the room in brilliant, warm gold.
