Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Over the next four weeks, Tessa’s life transformed entirely.
Her new role as Leo Rossi’s private executive steward meant she was no longer just a ghost cleaning in the background; she became an indispensable part of his daily life. She managed his private schedule, ensured his personal quarters were immaculate, accompanied him on high-level trips to his private estate in Geneva, and handled sensitive documents that contained numbers capable of bringing down half the politicians in the state.
She learned the quiet, hidden rhythms of Leo Rossi.
She learned that he rarely slept more than four hours a night, often spending the dark hours pacing his office or listening to classical piano music while sipping high-proof rye. She learned that he possessed a dry, razor-sharp sense of humor that only appeared in brief, rare glimpses when they were entirely alone. And she learned that beneath his terrifying, lethal exterior lay a brilliant, hyper-disciplined mind that ran a multi-billion-dollar legitimate enterprise alongside his underworld empire.
In turn, Leo treated her with a strange, unspoken protection. He never raised his voice at her, allowed her unprecedented access to his inner sanctum, and ensured that every capo, associate, and guard in his organization treated her with absolute, unyielding respect.
One cold rain-slicked evening in mid-December, Tessa was working late in Leo’s private study, organizing a stack of real estate deeds on his desk while he sat nearby, reviewing financial spreadsheets on his encrypted laptop.
A quiet knock sounded at the door. Marco stepped inside, his broad face unusually pale under the amber desk lamp.
"Boss," Marco said softly, his voice tight. "We have a problem."
Leo didn't look up from his screen. "Speak."
Marco glanced nervously at Tessa before leaning down closer to Leo. "The Detroit syndicate... they just rejected the dock settlement. Sal Falcone sent a message twenty minutes ago. They’ve moved armed teams into the North Side warehouses."
Leo’s fingers stopped moving across his keyboard. The air in the room instantly plummeted into a suffocating, icy stillness.
"Sal Falcone thinks he can take my warehouses?" Leo asked softly, his voice dangerously calm.
"He thinks you're distracted, boss," Marco whispered. "He thinks after the incident with Ricky the Hat, you've gone soft on internal security."
Leo slowly closed his laptop screen with a soft click. He stood up, adjusting the cuffs of his dark sweater. His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated menace.
"Assemble the capos in the basement board room," Leo commanded smoothly. "Tell Paulie to bring the heavy armaments."
"Yes, boss," Marco said, turning and leaving the room quickly.
Tessa stood frozen by the desk, clutching a folder tightly against her chest, her heart hammering wildly.
Leo turned his dark eyes onto her. The warmth and quiet familiarity that had built between them over the past month vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, terrifying aura of a mob boss preparing for war.
"Go to your quarters, Tessa," Leo ordered quietly. "Lock the door. Do not come down to the main floor tonight, no matter what sounds you hear."
Tessa swallowed hard, looking into his icy eyes. "Mr. Rossi... please be careful."
Leo paused, a subtle flicker of surprise crossing his features at her genuine concern. He stepped closer to her, reaching out a warm hand to rest gently against the side of her neck, his thumb lightly brushing across her cheekbone.

"No one touches what is mine, Tessa," Leo whispered, his voice dark and promising. "Go upstairs."
Tessa nodded numbly, stepping back from his touch, and hurried up the stairs to her private room as the estate descended into a silent, lethal lockdown.
