Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary Above the Clouds

The elevator opened directly into a sprawling penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows revealed a dark expanse of water merging with the stormy night sky. The interior was minimalist, decorated in shades of slate grey, dark wood, and polished steel.

A private physician, a quiet woman in her fifties, was already waiting in the living area with a medical bag.

"Dr. Aris," Luca said, guiding Elena toward a soft velvet sofa. "Examine her wrists, check for a concussion, and treat the lacerations. Ensure she receives proper pain management."

"Of course, Mr. Moretti," the doctor replied, opening her kit.

Elena sat on the couch, allowing the doctor to clean her wounds and wrap her wrists in soft medical gauze. Luca stood by the glass window, speaking quietly on a satellite phone in rapid, harsh Italian. Though she could not understand every word, she recognized the tone—he was issuing orders, mobilizing assets, and locking down security grids across the city.

When the doctor finished, she handed Elena a glass of water and two small white pills.

"You have minor soft-tissue bruising and slight exhaustion," Dr. Aris said kindly. "Take these for the pain and sleep. You are safe here."

"Thank you," Elena murmured.

The doctor packed her bag, bowed slightly to Luca, and exited via the private elevator.

Luca ended his call and walked over to the sofa. He picked up a soft cashmere throw blanket from the armchair and draped it gently over Elena’s legs.

"The apartment is secure," Luca said, sitting on the opposite end of the couch. "The glass is reinforced, and my personal detail controls the perimeter. Gregor will not reach this building."

Elena held the warm glass of water between her bandaged hands. "What happens to the dead man's switch? It’s four o'clock in the morning, Luca. If I don't access the server by eight, the federal warrant executes automatically."

Luca pulled a sleek black laptop from his briefcase and set it on the coffee table. "We let it run."

Elena looked at him, surprised. "What? If the FBI gets those files, your family’s entire financial structure collapses."

"My uncle's structure collapses," Luca corrected her cleanly. "Not mine. I have spent two years building a secondary, fully legitimate corporate holding entity. The files you uncovered contain the illegal routing numbers used by Carmine and Gregor to skim money from our legitimate development projects."

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees.

"You didn't ruin my business, Elena. You handed me the exact evidence I needed to purge the old guard from my organization without starting an open war in the streets."

Elena stared at him, trying to reconcile the man sitting before her with the quiet, attentive man she had loved two years ago.

"You planned this?" she asked.

"I did not plan for you to be kidnapped," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dark register. "That was Gregor’s desperation. But now that the files are in play, we use them. At eight AM, your dead man's switch will trigger. The FBI will execute arrest warrants for Don Carmine, Gregor Volkov, and twelve senior lieutenants."

"And you?" Elena asked. "Won't those files lead back to you?"

Luca reached out, gently taking her hand. "My name does not appear on a single document in that cache. I ensured that years ago. When the smoke clears tomorrow afternoon, the old syndicate will be gone, and I will control the remaining legitimate assets publicly."

Elena looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of deceit. "And what about me, Luca? Where do I go when the FBI starts asking questions about how I escaped that warehouse?"

"You stay with me," Luca said firmly, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "I will provide full legal immunity through my federal contacts. You will never have to answer a question from a prosecutor, and you will never be put in danger again."

Elena pulled her hand back slowly, looking down at her bandaged wrists.

"It isn't that simple, Luca," she whispered. "You can't just fix two years of silence with an iron-clad legal defense and a luxury penthouse."

May you like

Luca looked at her quietly, accepting her words without anger.

"I know," he said softly. "I do not expect you to forgive me tonight. I only ask that you let me keep you safe until the sun comes up."
