Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

The peace inside the penthouse was broken at four o'clock that afternoon by a sharp, urgent call to Luca’s secure line.

Luca answered, pressing the phone to his ear. "Speak."

"Luca, we have a situation at the Metropolitan Correctional Center," Marco’s voice came through, fast and strained. "Gregor Volkov didn't make it to the holding cell. During transport from the federal building, two armed vehicles intercepted the convoy near the highway interchange."

Luca’s expression turned to ice. "Did he escape?"

"Yes," Marco confirmed. "He took two federal officers hostage and broke out. Our intelligence indicates he has gathered a handful of surviving Volkov loyalists. He knows he’s finished in Chicago, Luca. He’s going to strike before he runs."

"He’s coming for Elena," Luca said instantly, his voice deadly quiet.

"We are reinforcing the high-rise perimeter now," Marco said. "He won't get past the lobby."

"No," Luca said, his mind working with terrifying speed. "Gregor knows this building is a fortress. He won't attack the lobby directly. He knows my operational protocols. He will target the service infrastructure—the power grid and the private elevator systems."

Luca turned to look at Elena, who was watching him with wide, concerned eyes.

"Marco," Luca commanded sharply. "Initiate Protocol Omega. Clear the building’s upper floors. Bring our primary tactical team to the penthouse floor immediately."

"Understood, boss."

Luca ended the call and walked quickly to a hidden panel in his study wall. He pressed his hand against a biometric scanner. The panel slid open, revealing an armory containing tactical gear, sidearms, and secure communication devices.

"Luca, what's happening?" Elena asked, stepping into the doorway of the study.

"Gregor escaped during transport," Luca said calmly, pulling a sleek black handgun from the rack, checking the magazine with practiced efficiency, and chambering a round with a sharp clack. "He is desperate, injured, and seeking revenge before he leaves the city."

Elena felt a cold spike of fear in her chest. "He’s coming here?"

"He will try," Luca said, stepping toward her and placing a light, high-threat tactical vest over her head, tightening the straps around her waist with practiced speed. "But this is my territory, Elena. In that warehouse, he had the advantage of surprise. Here, he has nothing."

He handed her a small, lightweight sidearm.

"Do you remember how to use this?" Luca asked, looking her dead in the eye. "The range practice we did two years ago during our weekend in the countryside?"

Elena looked down at the cold metal frame in her hands. She remembered the target shooting on the private property, how Luca had stood behind her, guiding her grip, showing her safety protocols with meticulous care.

"Safety off, smooth trigger pull, align the sights," she whispered.

"Good," Luca said, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Stay in the panic room behind my study desk. It has independent air filtration, reinforced steel walls, and a direct satellite line to the federal marshals. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marco."

"Luca, don't do this alone," she pleaded, grabbing his coat sleeve.

"I am never alone in this city, sweetheart," Luca said, giving her a fierce, reassuring smile. "Now go inside."
