Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Old Guard

At 8:15 AM, three miles west of the penthouse, six dark blue armored federal vehicles breached the gates of the historic West Loop estate belonging to Don Carmine Moretti.
Sirens echoed across the quiet residential streets as heavily armed federal agents deployed across the manicured lawns.
Inside the grand study of the estate, Don Carmine—an elderly man with thin grey hair and a expensive silk robe—sat across from Gregor Volkov. The room was chaotic, covered in shredded paper and half-packed suitcases.
"What do you mean the federal warrants were already signed?!" Carmine roared, slamming his frail hand onto his mahogany desk. "We have judges on our payroll! We have captains in the precinct!"
"The warrants came from the federal level, Don Carmine!" Gregor spat, his throat still red and swollen from Luca’s grip hours earlier. "It’s the auditor! She had a dead man's switch set up on an external node! The entire database was transmitted directly to the Department of Justice!"
Carmine’s face turned a dangerous shade of crimson. "Where is Luca?! Why is he not handling this?!"
"Luca betrayed us!" Gregor shouted, his eyes wild with panic. "He took the woman from the warehouse last night! He choked me into the concrete and took her! He’s working with her!"
Before Carmine could respond, the heavy oak doors of the study were blown inward by a tactical breach charge.
Smoke filled the room. Federal agents poured through the entrance, weapons raised, their voices cutting through the haze with terrifying clarity.
"Federal agents! Put your hands where we can see them! On the floor! Now!"
Gregor reached instinctively for the weapon tucked into his waistband.
POP. POP.
Two non-lethal round shots struck Gregor in the chest and shoulder, knocking him off his feet and pinning him against the wall. Agents swarmed him instantly, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Don Carmine remained frozen behind his desk, his hands trembling as an agent stepped forward and read him his rights.
Outside the estate grounds, parked across the street behind a row of tall oak trees, sat Marco inside a non-descript sedan. He watched through pair of binoculars as federal officers escorted Carmine and a bleeding Gregor out the front entrance and into the back of an armored van.
Marco picked up his secure phone and dialed.
"It’s done, boss," Marco reported cleanly. "Carmine and Gregor are in federal custody. The main estate is fully secured by the authorities."
In the penthouse study, Luca stood by the window, listening to the report.
"Did Gregor manage to destroy any of the secondary ledgers?" Luca asked.
"No," Marco replied. "The breach was too fast. The agents seized all servers and hard drives on site."
"Good," Luca said. "Maintain watch over the federal holding facility. Ensure our legal counsel files the necessary motions to isolate Carmine from the general population. I don't want him speaking to anyone until I have finalized the asset transfers."
"Understood, Mr. Moretti."
Luca ended the call and turned around.
Elena was standing in the doorway of the study, dressed in a clean ivory blouse and dark trousers that one of Luca’s staff had brought for her. She looked rested, though the dark bruises on her wrists were a stark reminder of the previous night.
"They took them?" she asked quietly.
"Yes," Luca said, walking toward her. "Don Carmine and Gregor are under arrest. The evidence you compiled was comprehensive enough that bail will be denied automatically. They will spend the rest of their lives in a federal facility."

Elena let out a long breath, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders that she hadn't realized she was carrying. "It's over."
"For them, yes," Luca said gently. "For us, it means we can finally talk without the world burning down around us."
