Chapter 5 - The Velvet Cage

The silence in the office was deafening. Outside, the rain poured relentlessly down the glass panes, casting dark, shimmering reflections across the room.

Elena stared at Matteo, her mind racing, struggling to process the sheer scope of his demands.

"Move into your penthouse?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "You're asking me to give up my independence, my apartment, my entire life."

"I am not asking," Matteo corrected softly, his fingers tightening gently around her hand. "I am giving you a choice. You can pack your bags tonight and move into the penthouse upstairs, where you will be safe, protected, and under my personal supervision. Or I can let Dominic handle Mr. Vance downstairs in the traditional manner of the Duca family."

He was handing her a contract written in blood. He was using a man's physical safety as a leverage point to force her into his private world. It was ruthless, tyrannical, and deeply manipulative—and yet, looking into his eyes, she knew with absolute certainty that he was not bluffing. If she refused, Julian Vance would end up at the bottom of the river, and Matteo would carry out the act without a second thought.

"You're a tyrant," she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks.

"I know," Matteo agreed smoothly, extending his thumb to catch a stray tear on her cheek, wiping it away with terrifying tenderness. "What is your answer, Elena?"

Elena looked over at Dominic, who stood near the door like a silent gargoyle, waiting for the command that would decide a man's fate. She thought of her quiet, independent life, her cozy apartment, the careful boundaries she had built over eighteen months to keep herself safe from the dangerous mafia world. All of it was collapsing, crumbling into ash under the sheer weight of Matteo's possessive obsession.

"Fine," she choked out, her voice barely audible. "Fine. I'll move into the penthouse. Just let him go. Tell your men to release him."

A profound, terrifying satisfaction lit up Matteo's dark eyes. The tension in his broad shoulders visibly eased, replaced by a dark, victorious calm.

"Dominic," Matteo said, his eyes never leaving Elena's face. "Release Mr. Vance. Fire him from the account, give him a generous severance package, and inform him that if he ever sets foot in Duca Tower or attempts to contact Miss Donovan again, his entire family will disappear."

"Understood, boss," Dominic nodded smoothly, turning on his heel and exiting the office, closing the heavy doors behind him.

Elena pulled her hand away from Matteo's grip, taking three steps backward, clutching her stomach as if she might be sick.

"Satisfied?" she spat out, her voice laced with deep, bitter hurt. "You've completely trapped me."

Matteo stood up slowly from his leather chair. He did not chase after her. He stood tall, imposing, and magnificent behind his desk, looking at her like a king looking at his newly conquered territory.

"You were never free, Elena," Matteo said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. "The moment you walked into this office eighteen months ago, you belonged to this room. You belonged to me. You were just too blind to see it."

"I am your employee!" she yelled, her composure completely shattering.

"Not anymore," Matteo replied flatly. "As of this moment, your resignation as my executive assistant is accepted. You will no longer manage my corporate schedule. You will no longer handle my legal filings."

Elena gasped. "What? Then what am I supposed to be?!"

Matteo walked around the desk, stopping two feet in front of her. He reached out, his hand gently grasping her collar, his long fingers slowly undoing the top button of her silk blouse, exposing the purple mark on her neck once again.

"You are going to be mine," Matteo murmured, his gaze dropping to the exposed skin. "Full time. Without the distraction of work. Without the pretense of a corporate hierarchy."

Before she could process his words, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a small, heavy gold key, and pressed it into her palm, folding her trembling fingers over the cool metal.

"This key opens the private elevator to the penthouse on the sixty-fifth floor," Matteo said quietly. "Dominic has already dispatched a team to your apartment to pack your personal belongings. They will be upstairs by six o'clock."

"You sent people to my apartment without my permission?!" she gasped, outraged.

"I am securing what is mine," Matteo said simply, as if explaining a basic law of physics. "Go upstairs, Elena. Take a warm bath. Rest. I have several pressing business matters to settle downstairs before dinner. I will join you at eight."

May you like

He leaned down, his mouth brushing against her cheek, hovering an inch from her lips.

"And do not bother looking for an exit," he added in a dark, possessive whisper. "The sixty-fifth floor is entirely secured. The doors only respond to my biometric scan and that key. You are in my world now."
