Chapter 8 - The Breach

The night inside the penthouse was a tempest of intense passion and unspoken devotion, a long-overdue surrender to the electric current that had existed between them for eighteen months. But in the dangerous world of the Duca syndicate, peace was an illusion that never lasted until morning.

At 4:00 AM, the harsh, metallic screech of an emergency alarm tore through the quiet bedroom.

Matteo was awake instantly. In a single fluid, predatory motion, he rolled out of bed, grabbing a sleek silver pistol from the concealed drawer inside the nightstand before his feet even touched the floor.

Elena sat up quickly, clutching the dark silk sheet to her chest, her eyes wide with sudden terror. "Matteo? What is that?!"

"Stay down," Matteo commanded, his voice returning to that chilling, absolute tone of authority. He pulled on his dark trousers and a black shirt, racking the slide of his weapon with a sharp, lethal metallic click.

The heavy structural walls of the penthouse vibrated with a low, distant thud, followed by the muffled sound of rapid gunfire echoeing from the lower floors of Duca Tower.

The private elevator chime sounded frantically in the foyer.

Matteo aimed his weapon directly at the sliding steel doors of the elevator, his body tensed like a coiled spring, ready to kill anything that stepped into his domain.

The elevator doors slid open, revealing Dominic Rossi. The enforcer was bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, his suit jacket torn, holding a heavy submachine gun in his hands.

"Boss!" Dominic shouted, stepping into the foyer, his face dark with adrenaline. "It's the Marcone family! They've breached the lower parking garage! They brought thirty armed men, hitting the security grid with heavy explosives!"

Elena gasped from the bedroom doorway, her hands flying to her mouth.

Matteo didn't flinch. His expression remained entirely carved from ice. "How did they bypass the perimeter sensors on the fourth floor?"

"An insider," Dominic spat bitterly, wiping blood from his eyes. "Someone leaked the security codes for the private elevator shaft. They knew you were staying in the penthouse tonight, boss. They're coming straight up to the top floor."

Matteo turned his head slowly, looking back at Elena standing near the bedroom door. The realization hit him like a physical blow—the Marcones weren't launching a routine turf raid on his business; they were launching a targeted decapitation strike on his life, using the exact night he had brought Elena into the open to corner him.

"How long until the secondary security blast doors trigger?" Matteo demanded, turning back to Dominic.

"Three minutes," Dominic reported grimly. "The main emergency stairwell is already compromised. We have to move you and Elena to the rooftop helipad now!"

"No," Matteo said flatly. "If they have the stairwells, they have sniper coverage on the roof. We stay right here and hold the floor."

He turned back to Elena, walking over to her with fast, deliberate steps. He took her trembling hands in his, pressing the cool metal of a small, concealed derringer pistol into her palm, folding her fingers over the grip.

"Listen to me very carefully, Elena," Matteo said, his dark eyes holding hers with absolute intensity. "You go into the master bathroom. Lock the reinforced steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone. Do not open it unless you hear my voice give you the clearance code."

"Matteo, no! I'm not leaving you!" she cried out, her tears spilling over her lashes, gripping his hands tightly. "They're coming for you!"

"They are coming for what is mine," Matteo corrected softly, leaning down to press a hard, fierce kiss against her lips, tasting the salty tears on her skin. "And I will slaughter every single one of them before I let them lay a finger on you."

He pushed her gently toward the bathroom, waiting until she stepped inside, before pulling the heavy reinforced door shut and locking it from the outside with his master electronic key.

"Matteo!" she screamed, pounding her fists against the thick steel door from inside, her voice muffled by the soundproofing. "Matteo, please!"

Matteo turned away from the door, his face completely transforming into a mask of pure, murderous wrath. The civilized CEO was entirely gone. The monster had officially taken full control.

He walked into the living room, picking up a second heavy magazine from the table, locking it into his pistol with a satisfying click.

"Dominic," Matteo said quietly, his voice echoing through the silent, dark penthouse like a death sentence. "Let's show the Marcones what happens when they enter my home."
