Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage

The sixty-fifth floor of Duca Tower was a breathtaking, sprawling expanse of modern luxury and absolute isolation.
Elena stood in the center of the massive living room, staring out through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls at the panoramic view of the rain-slicked city below. The interior was decorated in rich, dark tones—black marble floors, plush dark velvet furniture, custom warm lighting, and private art collections that cost more than most people earned in a lifetime.
It was magnificent. It was luxurious. And it was an absolute prison.
In the master bedroom, four large leather suitcases sat near the walk-in closet—her personal belongings, neatly packed and transported from her apartment in less than two hours by Matteo's efficient, silent enforcers.
Elena walked into the bedroom, unzipping the largest suitcase. Everything was there—her clothes, her books, her favorite photographs, her personal jewelry box. They hadn't looted her apartment; they had systematically dismantled her old life and reconstructed it inside Matteo's private sanctuary.
She sat on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, burying her face in her hands.
How had her life turned upside down in less than twelve hours? This morning, she had been Elena Donovan, the hyper-efficient, independent corporate assistant who had her entire life under total control. Now, she was locked in a mafia don't top-floor suite, stripped of her job, her apartment, and her freedom, all because of a stupid mark on her neck that had ignited a monster's possessive wrath.
She looked up at the digital clock on the bedside table. 7:45 PM.
Fifteen minutes before Matteo arrived.
Panic flickered in her chest. What did he expect from her tonight? She was no longer his employee. She was trapped in his private quarters. Was he going to claim her physically? Was he going to force himself upon her the way he had forced her into this cage?
She stood up quickly, walking over to her open suitcase. She pulled out a simple, high-collared black sweater and dark trousers, quickly changing out of her corporate suit. She pulled her hair up into a tight bun, washing her face once more in the master bathroom's marble sink. She needed her mind sharp. She needed to establish boundaries inside this cage, or she would be completely consumed by his presence.
At 8:00 PM sharp, a soft, mechanical chime echoed through the penthouse.
The private elevator doors slid open in the foyer.
Elena stood in the living room, her spine rigid, her chin lifted, preparing herself for a confrontation.
Matteo walked into the apartment. He had changed out of his suit, wearing a comfortable black cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up to his forearms and dark trousers. He looked younger, softer without the corporate armor, but the dark, predatory aura that surrounded him remained entirely unchanged.
He carried a silver tray with two covered plates and a bottle of expensive red wine.
He set the tray down on the marble dining table, looking across the vast room at her. His eyes swept over her simple black sweater, noticing the high collar hiding her neck, a faint, amused smile touching his lips.
"You didn't run," Matteo noted smoothly, pulling out a chair at the table.
"Where would I run?" Elena replied bitterly, stepping toward the dining area. "The elevator requires your biometric scan. The windows are bulletproof glass. You've locked me in a golden cage, Matteo."
"A cage implies you are being punished, Elena," Matteo said softly, opening the bottle of wine and pouring two glasses. "You are not being punished. You are being protected."
"Protected from what?" she demanded, stopping at the opposite end of the table. "From my own life? From normal people? The only dangerous thing in my life right now is you!"
Matteo stopped pouring the wine. He set the bottle down with a soft click, looking up at her with an expression of quiet, absolute intensity.
"You think the world outside this tower is safe?" Matteo asked, his voice low and dangerous. "You think you were living a normal life, Elena? You are the assistant to the head of the largest syndicate on the East Coast. For eighteen months, my enemies have watched you. They know your route to work. They know your apartment address. The only reason no one pulled you into an alley to use you as leverage against me is because I had four armed enforcers following you every single day of your life."
Elena froze, her mouth opening slightly in sheer shock. "What?"
"You thought you were walking home alone at night?" Matteo chuckled darkly, taking a step toward her around the table. "You thought you were taking the subway by yourself? Every step you took outside your apartment was monitored by my men. You have been under my protection since the second day you started working for me."
"You... you had me followed?" she whispered, horror and confusion swirling in her mind.
"I had you guarded," Matteo corrected firmly, stopping inches away from her. "Because if anything ever happened to you, if any rival syndicate ever put their filthy hands on you to get to me, I would burn this entire city to the ground to get you back."
May you like
He reached out, his warm, heavy hand resting against the side of her neck, his fingers gently pressing against her skin.
"And I will be damned," Matteo whispered, his voice dark with possessive rage, "if I let some pathetic, useless accountant do what my worst enemies were too afraid to attempt."
