Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The heavy oak courtyard door shuddered under the violent impact of a battering ram from the outside. The Valente strike team was breaching the lower corridor.
Sophia knew she couldn't stay. If her father's men found her here beside the dying leader of the DeMarco family, Luciano would be executed on the spot, and she would be swept back into her father's violent world forever.
"Renato!" Sophia screamed at the top of her lungs toward the burning staircase. "RENATO!"
Footsteps pounded down the stone steps. Renato emerged from the smoke, his face blackened by soot, holding an automatic pistol. He aimed his gun at Sophia, but stopped dead when he saw his boss lying unconscious on the floor, covered in blood, with Sophia kneeling beside him holding pressure on his wound.
"He's hit in the subclavian artery!" Sophia shouted over the roar of the fire, her voice filled with absolute command. "If you don't carry him out through the service tunnels right now, he will die in three minutes!"
Renato didn't ask questions. He ran forward, slinging his rifle over his shoulder, and scooped Luciano's heavy frame up over his broad shoulders.
"The tunnel hatch is behind the boiler room!" Renato yelled to her. "Come with us!"
"No," Sophia said, standing up and backing away toward the shadows of the sacristy. "Take him and go."
"He won't let me leave you behind!" Renato insisted, grabbing her upper arm with a iron grip. "If he wakes up and you're gone, he'll kill me himself!"
Before Sophia could protest, Renato pulled her roughly along behind him as he kicked open a hidden steel hatch in the floor of the boiler room. They descended into a pitch-black, damp drainage tunnel beneath the old church just as the courtyard door above was violently blown off its hinges by explosive charges.
They ran through the dark, cold water of the underground tunnels for twenty minutes, the sound of gunfire fading into the distance behind them.
They emerged inside an abandoned auto repair garage three miles away near the shipping docks. A blacked-out SUV was waiting in the shadows, two DeMarco guards standing by the open doors with weapons drawn.
"Get him in the back!" Renato ordered, laying Luciano out across the rear leather seats.
One of the guards pulled a high-tech medical trauma kit from the trunk. Renato, trained in field combat medicine, immediately tore open Luciano's shirt, driving a chest tube into his side to relieve the collapsed lung while packing the arterial wound with military-grade clotting gauze.
Sophia stood near the garage door, shivering violently in her blood-soaked, torn clothes, watching the men work franticly to stabilize the man who had been her torturer hours before.
After ten agonizing minutes, Luciano's ragged breathing stabilized. The clotting gauze held. His color was still ghostly pale, but his pulse was steadying.
Renato wiped his bloody hands on a towel and walked over to Sophia. He looked at her with a profound, uncharacteristic respect.
"Why didn't you let your father's men take you?" Renato asked quietly. "You were free. You could have gone home."
Sophia looked out through the cracked garage window at the dark Chicago skyline. "My father kept me in the dark my entire life about who he really was. Luciano kept me in the dark for eleven days. I'm done being kept in the dark by powerful men."
She turned her face toward Renato. "Where are you taking him?"
"A private medical safehouse in Lake Forest," Renato replied. "No hospitals. The Valente family has informants in every trauma center in the city."
He looked down at Luciano's right hand, which was still tightly clenched around the silver cross necklace. Even in a deep, shock-induced coma, his fingers refused to release the metal.

"He held onto that cross the entire time we were running," Renato noted softly, looking back up at her. "What is it?"
Sophia touched her bare neck, where the cold metal had rested for fifteen years. "It's the reason he's alive today."
