Chapter 9 - The Restoration

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago. The cold, brutal snows of winter had melted away, replaced by blooming tulips along Michigan Avenue and warm sunshine reflecting off the Chicago River.

In a quiet, sunlit studio building in the Arts District, the air smelled of linseed oil, turpentine, and aged varnish. High arched windows allowed natural light to flood across dozens of wooden easels holding ancient, delicate oil paintings.

Sophia stood before a massive fifteenth-century Italian canvas depicting a garden, holding a fine badger-hair brush in her hand. She was carefully restoring a damaged section of gold leafing on an angel's wing, her face focused, serene, and entirely at peace.

She wore a simple beige linen apron over a soft blue dress. On her neck, resting comfortably against her skin, was her restored silver cross.

The studio door chimed softly.

Sophia smiled without turning around. "You're ten minutes early."

Luciano walked into the studio. He wore a dark blue tailored suit without a tie, looking healthy, powerful, and relaxed. His right shoulder had healed completely, leaving only a faint scar beneath his crisp shirt.

He walked up behind her, holding a massive bouquet of fresh white peonies—her favorite flowers.

"I had a meeting downtown finish early," Luciano said softly, leaning down to press a gentle kiss against the side of her neck. He set the flowers on her work desk. "How is the angel coming along?"

"She's almost restored," Sophia replied, turning in his arms to face him, resting her hands on his chest. "A few more hours of delicate work, and no one will ever know she was torn apart."

Luciano looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, reverent warmth that still amazed her every single day. Over the past six months, he had systematically dismantled the violent arms of his family's syndicate, converting their massive wealth into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and art conservation trusts.

He had promised her he would leave the shadows behind, and he had kept every single word.

"I brought something for you," Luciano murmured, reaching into his inner jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box and opened it.

Inside lay a breathtaking antique ring—a brilliant, flawless cushion-cut sapphire set in intricate platinum filigree that mirrored the medieval patterns of the paintings she loved so dearly.

Sophia gasped softly, her hand coming up to touch her lips. "Luciano..."

"Nine years ago, you gave me a silver cross in the freezing snow and saved my life," Luciano said, his voice deep, emotional, and filled with absolute sincerity. "Six months ago, you stood in the dark and saved my soul. Every good thing I have in this world, Sophia... every breath I take... belongs to you."

He took her hand, slipping the sapphire ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

"Spend the rest of your life with me," Luciano asked softly, looking straight into her eyes. "Let me protect your light forever."

Tears of pure happiness welled up in Sophia's eyes. She smiled—a brilliant, radiant smile that lit up the entire sunlit room.

"Yes," she whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a passionate, endless kiss. "Yes, Luciano. Forever."
