Chapter 8 - The Summit at the Drake

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was locked down under heavy armed security. Over fifty high-ranking mobsters, family bosses, and elder consiglieres sat around a massive, rectangular mahogany table beneath glittering crystal chandeliers.
At the head of the table sat Vittorio Valente. At sixty-two, Vittorio looked distinguished, wearing a bespoke double-breasted gray suit, his silver hair perfectly styled. His face was a mask of grief and righteous fury as he addressed the silent room of underworld leaders.
"Luciano DeMarco has crossed a line that cannot be forgiven!" Vittorio shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "He dragged my innocent daughter from her home! He held her hostage in a basement like an animal! He has broken every law of our sacred commission! I demand his life, and I demand the complete liquidation of the DeMarco territory!"
A murmur of agreement rumbled through the elder bosses.
"Where is the girl, Vittorio?" an old Sicilian boss from the Moretti family asked, leaning forward over his cane. "Is she alive?"
"DeMarco murdered her!" Vittorio lied smoothly, pulling a white handkerchief to wipe his eyes. "My scouts found blood in the church basement! He killed my sweet Sophia to hurt me!"
"That is a lie," a clear, commanding voice echoed from the grand double doors of the ballroom.
The heavy doors were thrown open.
Luciano DeMarco walked into the ballroom, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, his right arm resting in a black silk sling beneath his jacket. Beside him, walking with absolute poise, dignity, and grace, was Sophia Valente. She wore an elegant floor-length dark emerald dress, her chin held high, the silver cross glittering proudly against her neck.
Behind them stood Renato and twenty heavily armed DeMarco soldiers, their weapons held at low ready.
The ballroom exploded into utter chaos. Bosses stood up from their chairs, guards reached for shoulder holsters, and shouting echoed off the gilded ceiling.
"Quiet!" the old Sicilian boss roared, slamming his cane against the floor. "SIT DOWN! ALL OF YOU!"
The room fell into a tense, vibrating silence.
Vittorio Valente stared at his daughter as if seeing a ghost. His face turned a sickly, ashen gray, his lips trembling in sheer, paralyzed shock. "Sophia...?"
Sophia walked slowly down the central aisle between the tables, stopping ten feet away from her father. She looked at him not with anger, but with a cold, devastating pity.
"Hello, Father," Sophia said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "I heard you were mourning my death."
"Sophia... my sweet girl..." Vittorio stammered, stepping forward with outstretched arms. "Thank God you're alive! They captured you... they forced you—"
"Nobody forced me, Vittorio," Sophia interrupted, her voice sharp as an ice pick. "Luciano DeMarco didn't murder me. But nine years ago, you tried to murder him. And three weeks ago, you set up the shipping leaks that killed his brother."
"She's confused!" Vittorio screamed, turning frantically to the commission members. "She's been brainwashed! She's suffering from trauma!"
Luciano stepped forward, pulling a digital tablet from Renato's hands and tossing it onto the center of the mahogany table.
"The digital logs are linked to the commission server right now," Luciano announced calmly. "Thirty years of Vittorio Valente's private audio recordings, federal immunity agreements, and bank wire transfers showing he traded commission secrets to the FBI in exchange for personal protection."
The elder bosses immediately leaned over the tablet, scrolling through the undeniable digital proof. Within seconds, the mood in the room shifted from outrage against Luciano to lethal, icy rage directed entirely at Vittorio.
The old Sicilian boss stood up slowly, looking at Vittorio with pure disgust. "You sold us out to the feds, Vittorio. You broke the oath."
Vittorio backed away, his eyes darting wildly to his personal bodyguards standing near the perimeter walls. "Guards! Shoot them! Shoot them all!"
Not a single guard moved. They stood frozen, looking down at their boots, recognizing that Vittorio Valente's reign had ended.
Vittorio reached frantically into his coat pocket for a concealed revolver.
THWACK.
Renato stepped forward, raising his weapon, but Luciano was faster. Even with his injured shoulder, Luciano drew his sidearm with his left hand and fired a single, precise shot.
The bullet struck the floor an inch from Vittorio's shoe, sending stone fragments flying into his shin. Vittorio collapsed to his knees, crying out in pain, dropping his revolver onto the carpet.
Luciano walked over, kicking the gun away, and stood over the fallen boss.
"The commission will handle Vittorio," the old Sicilian boss declared quietly. "Take him away."
Four commission guards grabbed Vittorio by his arms, dragging him kicking and screaming out of the ballroom toward the rear exit. As he was pulled past Sophia, he looked at her with desperate, tear-filled eyes.

"Sophia! Please! Tell them! I'm your father!"
Sophia turned her back on him, refusing to look as the heavy double doors slammed shut, sealing her father's fate forever.
