Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heart

One year later.

The summer sun beamed down on the rolling hills of the Romano private estate in the countryside. The vast stone mansion overlooked miles of pristine vineyards, heavy blue lakes, and thick pine forests.

On the front lawn, a large wooden gazebo sat surrounded by blooming red roses.

Mara sat on a comfortable swinging bench beneath the shade of the gazebo, wearing a simple white sun dress. Resting in a woven bassinet beside her was three-week-old Matteo Romano, sleeping peacefully wrapped in a soft blue blanket.

A few yards away on the grass, Dante was down on one knee, completely ignoring his tailored linen trousers as he helped five-year-old Lucia build a massive wooden toy castle in the dirt.

"No, Mr. Dante! The tower goes on this side so the dragon can't get inside!" Lucia instructed bossily, pointing her small finger at a wooden block.

"My apologies, Princess," Dante said with mock seriousness, carefully placing the wooden block exactly where she commanded. "The defense strategy must be flawless."

Mara watched them with a quiet, overwhelming joy filling her chest. The dark days of hiding in locked linen rooms, crying in secret, and fearing predatory loan sharks felt like a distant, half-remembered nightmare from another life.

Dante stood up, dusted off his knees, and walked over to the gazebo. He sat down beside Mara on the wooden bench, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her head down onto his chest.

"How is he?" Dante asked softly, looking down at the sleeping baby in the bassinet.

"He's quiet," Mara smiled, resting her hand on Dante's knee. "Just like his father."

"He'd better be quiet," Dante joked lightly, his grey eyes softening as he looked at his son. "One loud boss in this family is enough."

Lucia came running into the gazebo, holding her worn cloth rabbit in one hand and a newly picked yellow wildflower in the other. She pushed herself up onto the bench between Dante and Mara, carefully handing the flower to her mother.

"For you, Mommy! Because you're the queen!" Lucia declared proudly.

Mara took the flower, her eyes shining with soft tears as she kissed her daughter's forehead. "Thank you, my sweet girl."

Dante looked at the woman sitting beside him—the woman he had once found crying behind a locked door in the dark, the woman whose quiet dignity had shattered his cold heart, and the woman who had transformed a ruthless mafia king into a devoted husband and father.

He leaned down, pressing his lips gently against Mara’s soft temple, holding his family tight against his chest as the warm afternoon wind rustled through the rose garden.

The empire was secure. The city was silent. And the king had finally found his home.
