Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Syndicate

By two o'clock in the morning, the heavy rain had turned into a steady, freezing mist. Inside the soundproofed underground study beneath the estate, Dante Romano sat behind a heavy oak desk, staring at a set of surveillance monitors displaying live feeds from every corner of the property.
Standing across from him was Marco Rossi, his second-in-command and chief of security. Marco was a battle-hardened man who had served the Romano family for twenty years.
"The perimeter is secure, Dante," Marco said, tossing a manila folder onto the desk. "Our men spotted two scouts from the Moretti family near the south gate two hours ago. We handled them cleanly. No noise."
Dante didn't look at the folder. He was staring at Monitor 4, which showed the rear kitchen entrance of the west wing. Mara Bellini was sitting at a small wooden table, carefully wrapping a fresh bandage around her left wrist while Lucia slept on a small cot in the corner room.
"How long has Celeste been abusing the staff?" Dante asked, his voice cut like glass.
Marco paused, caught off guard by the sudden shift in subject. He glanced at the monitor, then sighed softly. "Since the day the engagement was announced six months ago. She treats the servants like dirt, Dante. But no one spoke up because she’s Senator Vane's daughter. Everyone assumed you approved."
"I never approve of cruelty," Dante said quietly, his eyes hardening. "Cruelty is the tool of weak men who lack real power."
"Celeste feels empowered because the alliance between the Romano family and Senator Vane gives us political immunity," Marco pointed out carefully. "The wedding tomorrow night seals our control over the city harbor. Your late father organized this union years ago. If you break it off now over a maid, the Moretti family will use the Senator's influence to launch a full federal raid on our shipping routes."
Dante finally turned his gaze away from the screen to look at Marco. "I didn't say I was breaking it off over a maid, Marco."
"Then what are you doing?"
"I am investigating why Mara Bellini’s husband abandoned her three years ago," Dante said, leaning back in his leather chair. "Look into her background. I want every debt, every loan shark, and every name attached to her family brought to this desk before the sun rises."
Marco frowned slightly. "Dante, she’s just a housekeeper. She has nothing to do with syndicate operations."
"She works inside my house," Dante replied sharply. "Her daughter walked into my corridor wearing no shoes while my fiancée smashed glassware across the room. I want to know who threatens her."
Marco recognized that look in Dante’s eyes—it was the same look he wore right before he launched a hostile takeover against rival families. "I’ll have the records ready by 5:00 AM."

After Marco exited the study, Dante stood up and walked over to the reinforced glass display case in the corner of the room. Inside lay his father's old silver signet ring, engraved with the crest of the Romano empire. His father had taught him three fundamental rules of leadership: keep your friends close, keep your enemies under your boot, and never let anyone disrespect the roof over your head.
Celeste Vane had crossed a line in his house tonight. But more than that, Dante realized with a quiet, dangerous certainty that the faint sight of tears on Mara Bellini’s face had stirred something inside him—something dark, possessive, and entirely lethal that he hadn't felt in many years.
