Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Vanes

By sunrise, the attack on the Romano estate had been completely crushed. Twenty-four Moretti mercenaries were eliminated, their bodies cleared away before dawn broke over the city skyline.

Dante sat at the head of the long mahogany table inside his war room. Surrounding him were the bosses of the three remaining syndicate families who had maintained neutrality during the conflict.

Standing in the center of the room, flanked by two heavily armed Romano guards, was Senator Vane. The politician looked disheveled, terrified, and completely stripped of his usual legislative arrogance.

"Dante, please!" Senator Vane pleaded, his hands trembling as he held a briefcase. "I had nothing to do with the Moretti attack last night! I swear it on my life! It was Don Moretti's idea! He used my security codes to bypass your outer fence!"

Dante swirled a glass of vintage whiskey, his expression completely impassive. "You gave him the codes, Senator."

"He threatened to expose my offshore accounts!" the Senator stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead. "I had no choice!"

"You always have a choice," Dante said softly, setting his glass down with a quiet clink. He gestured toward Marco, who tossed a thick folder onto the table in front of the syndicate bosses.

"Inside that folder," Dante announced calmly to the room, "are complete video recordings of Senator Vane accepting bribes from the Moretti family, authorizing illegal shipments through the harbor, and plotting the assassination of two federal judges. By 9:00 AM, a copy of this file will be delivered to the Director of the FBI."

Senator Vane collapsed to his knees, his face turning ghostly white. "Dante, no! You'll ruin my family! You'll destroy Celeste's future!"

"Your family destroyed itself when your daughter mistreated my people," Dante replied coldly. "And as for the Moretti family..."

Dante looked at the three neutral bosses sitting at the table. "As of 6:00 AM this morning, my men executed Don Moretti and his two sons inside their estate. The Moretti territory is now vacant. I am offering fifty percent of their shipping docks to your families, provided you pledge absolute loyalty to the Romano empire."

The three syndicate bosses exchanged shocked, reverent glances before nodding in unison.

"We accept, Don Romano," the oldest boss said, bowing his head respectfully.

"Take the Senator away," Dante ordered quietly. "Hand him over to the federal authorities at the city limits."

The guards dragged the weeping politician out of the room, his frantic pleas echoing down the stone corridor until the heavy double doors swept shut.

Dante stood up from the table, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, and looked out over his vast estate. The storm had finally passed, replaced by crisp morning sunlight breaking through the clouds.

Marco stepped up beside him. "The city is yours now, Dante. Uncontested. Senator Vane is finished, Moretti is dead, and the other families are bowing to your feet. You have built the greatest empire this syndicate has ever seen."

Dante looked down toward the gardens on the west side of the estate. Sitting on a stone bench in the warm sunlight was Mara Bellini, watching little Lucia run around the flowerbeds chasing butterflies. The little girl was laughing happily, her yellow cardigan bright against the green grass.

"An empire is useless, Marco," Dante murmured softly, a look of profound peace settling over his hard features, "unless you have someone worthy to share it with."
