Chapter 3 - The Trap at the Pier

The following afternoon, the sky over Long Island Sound was a dark, brooding slate-grey. A freezing November wind whipped across the wooden planks of Pier 14, driving dark ocean spray against the rusted hulls of cargo ships anchored near the shore.

Pier 14 was Valente territory—a sprawling, gated maritime terminal that handled millions of dollars in international freight every week.

A sleek black luxury sedan pulled up to the edge of the pier, its engine humming smoothly against the roar of the ocean.

The rear door opened, and Julian Mercer stepped out, holding a black umbrella over his head to shield his tailored suit from the freezing mist. Standing waiting for him near the edge of the wooden dock were four heavy-set men wearing dark leather jackets—enforcers belonging to the Moretti crime family, the Valente family’s bitterest rivals from across the bay.

Leading the Moretti men was a scarred, thuggish captain named Dominic Moretti.

“You’re late, Mercer,” Moretti grunted, spitting a wad of chewing tobacco into the dark ocean water below. “Did the young king keep you on a leash again?”

Julian smiled his cold, arrogant smile, adjusting his silk tie. “Luca is distracted. The boy is beginning to question things he has no business questioning. His mind is soft.”

Moretti scoffed. “Is the housekeeper going to plant the bug in his office or not? We need his private harbor access codes before the federal shipment arrives on Friday.”

“The housekeeper will comply,” Julian said smoothly, resting his hand casually on his cane. “I made it abundantly clear to her that her daughter’s life depends on her cooperation. Desperate mothers are remarkably easy to manipulate.”

Moretti let out a dark, cruel laugh. “Threatening a three-year-old kid? Damn, Mercer, you’re colder than old man Valente ever was.”

“Power requires coldness, Dominic,” Julian replied flatly, his onyx ring gleaming in the dim afternoon light. “Luca lacks the killer instinct his father possessed. He spends his time brooding in his library, worrying about loyalty and honor. He doesn't understand that honor is a myth invented by weak men to justify their submission.”

Julian stepped closer to the edge of the pier, pulling a sealed brown envelope from his leather briefcase.

“Here are the preliminary patrol schedules for the western perimeter,” Julian said. “Once you have the full codes from the USB drive, you move your men into Warehouse 4 and liquidate Luca’s primary shipping asset. By Monday morning, the board will lose complete confidence in Luca’s ability to protect family assets, and I will step in to take full control of the empire.”

Moretti reached out his thick, scarred hand to grab the envelope.

Before his fingers could touch the paper, a sharp, deafening BANG echoed across the wooden pier.

Moretti’s eyes went wide with shock. A tiny red hole appeared directly in the center of his forehead. He stumbled backward, his knees buckling beneath him, and fell over the wooden railing into the freezing dark ocean waters below with a heavy splash.

The three remaining Moretti enforcers reached frantically for their weapons.

From behind the tall metal shipping containers surrounding the pier, a dozen heavily armed Valente security men stepped out into the open, their automatic weapons trained directly on the three surviving men.

Leading them, dressed in a long black wool overcoat, was Dominic Vance.

“Drop your weapons!” Dominic roared, his voice cutting through the ocean gale like thunder.

The three Moretti thugs instantly threw their handguns onto the wooden planks, raising their hands high into the air in utter terror.

Julian Mercer stood completely motionless under his black umbrella. His face had gone entirely devoid of color, his jaw tightly clenched as he stared at Dominic Vance stepping toward him.

Then, from the shadows of Warehouse 4, a tall, dark silhouette walked out slowly onto the rain-slicked pier.

Luca Valente walked toward them, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the wet wood. He was not carrying a weapon; his hands were tucked casually into the pockets of his heavy coat, his dark hair damp from the sea mist, his face carved from pure, terrifying marble.

He stopped five feet away from Julian.

“Luca,” Julian rasped out, his voice finally losing its smooth, flawless cadence. “This... this is a misunderstanding. I was conducting an undercover counter-intelligence operation to trap the Moretti family—”

Luca didn't scream. He didn't raise his voice. He simply looked at Julian with an absolute, sterile detachment that was infinitely more terrifying than any outburst of rage could ever be.

“Save your breath, Julian,” Luca said softly, his voice carrying clearly over the sound of the crashing waves. “You sat at my father’s right hand for ten years. You sat at my table for a decade. I gave you wealth, authority, and my absolute trust.”

Luca took one step closer, looking down at Julian’s right hand.

“And you used that position to threaten a three-year-old girl in my home.”

Julian swallowed hard, his hands beginning to shake violently as he gripped his umbrella. “Luca... listen to reason! The family needs strong leadership! You’re wasting resources on sentimentality! You were soft!”

Luca looked out over the dark, turbulent waters of Long Island Sound.

“My father once told me that the difference between a leader and a tyrant is simple,” Luca murmured quietly. “A tyrant uses fear to rule the strong. A leader uses strength to protect the weak.”

Luca turned his gaze back onto Julian’s pale, terrified face.

“You thought Mia was a weakness, Julian. You thought her innocence was something to exploit.”

Luca raised his hand slightly, nodding once toward Dominic Vance.

“You were wrong. She was the test you failed.”

Dominic Vance stepped forward, grabbing Julian by his lapels and slamming him down onto his knees against the wet wooden planks of the pier. The black umbrella blew away in the wind, tumbling off the dock into the ocean.

Julian Mercer—the master strategist who had manipulated criminal empires for twenty years—was reduced to kneeling in the freezing rain before the young king he had sought to destroy.

“What are you going to do with me?!” Julian wept frantically, his eyes wide with absolute panic as Dominic Vance pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.

Luca looked down at the kneeling man, his face cold, unyielding, and absolute.

“You are going to tell me every single name, every account, and every hidden asset tied to the Moretti family,” Luca commanded smoothly. “And then, Julian... you are going to vanish from this city forever.”
