Chapter 9 - The Legacy of the Shield

Five years later.
The autumn sun broke gently over the granite cliffs of the Valente estate, reflecting off the calm blue waters of Long Island Sound.
The estate had changed dramatically over the years. The cold, intimidating silence that had once defined the stone halls during his father’s era was gone, replaced by the warm, vibrant rhythm of a true home.
Luca sat at his executive desk in the grand mahogany library. At thirty-seven, he looked as formidable and imposing as ever, though the sharp, paranoid lines that used to harden his forehead had vanished entirely.
On the wall behind his desk, framed in a sleek silver-and-glass casing, hung the original crayon drawing from five years ago—the simple yellow paper depicting the big blue shield protecting the estate.
The library door opened softly.
Walking into the room was eight-year-old Mia.
She had outgrown her tiny toddler suit long ago, but today she wore a custom-made blazer, dark trousers, and her polished silver Valente badge pinned proudly to her jacket. Under her arm, she carried a thick leather-bound folder containing her elementary school honor roll certificates and her junior martial arts achievement ribbons.
Behind her walked Elena, looking radiant and happy, carrying a tray of morning tea.
“Morning briefing, Mr. Boss,” Mia announced with a confident smile, stepping up to the large mahogany desk.
Luca set down his pen, leaning back in his chair with a warm, proud grin. “Report, Detective.”
Mia set her folder down on the desk, opening it up neatly. “Perimeter check clean. Homework completed with straight A's. And Dominic says I passed my self-defense drills with high marks this morning.”
Luca looked at the little girl who had once walked into his dressing room in oversized sunglasses. She was growing up smart, brave, kind, and fiercely independent—a child who knew she was loved, valued, and entirely safe.
“Outstanding work, Mia,” Luca said sincerely. “What’s the priority for today?”
“Protecting the little people,” Mia answered instantly, her eyes sparkling with absolute conviction.

Luca looked up at Elena, who offered him a soft, affectionate smile, then back down at Mia.
“Always,” Luca agreed softly.
