Chapter 7 - The Guardian’s Oath

An hour after the Falcone syndicate’s hasty departure, the heavy storm outside finally broke, leaving behind a quiet, moonlit evening over Long Island Sound.

Luca stood on the wide stone terrace behind the mansion, watching the fog lift off the ocean water. He was wearing his black trousers and a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, sipping a glass of scotch.

The glass doors behind him slid open softly.

Elena Reyes walked out onto the terrace, holding a small tray with an empty coffee pot. She stopped a respectful distance away, her face filled with quiet concern.

“Mr. Valente?” Elena asked softly. “Thomas told me the guests from Chicago have left.”

Luca turned his head slowly, looking at her. “They won't be returning, Elena.”

Elena breathed a long, quiet sigh of relief, stepping closer to the terrace railing. She looked out at the ocean, then turned her eyes to Luca.

“I’m sorry Mia interrupted your meeting earlier, sir,” Elena said, her voice filled with genuine apology. “I turned my back for one second in the kitchen to tend to the soup, and she slipped away.”

Luca took a slow sip of his scotch, a small, genuine smile touching his lips.

“She gave Don Falcone better advice than his own captains ever did,” Luca remarked quietly.

Elena smiled softly, stepping up to the stone railing beside him.

“She idolizes you, Mr. Valente,” Elena confessed in a quiet whisper. “Every morning when she gets dressed in that tiny suit, she looks in the mirror and asks me if she looks as strong as Mr. Luca.”

Luca looked down into his amber glass, watching the ice cubes swirl in the whiskey.

“I am not a hero, Elena,” Luca said quietly, his voice carrying a deep, honest weight. “I rule a world built on blood, violence, and dangerous compromises. Most men in my position die young or end up behind iron bars.”

He turned his head to look directly into Elena’s eyes.

“Mia shouldn't idolize a man like me.”

Elena looked at him for a long, heavy moment. She didn't see the feared mob boss who held the entire East Coast in an iron grip. She saw the man who had lowered himself to his knees on a hardwood floor to straighten a toddler’s crooked tie; the man who had confronted a traitor to protect her life; the man who had stood down a dangerous syndicate to keep her child safe.

“A hero is just a word people put in books, Mr. Valente,” Elena said softly, her voice filled with deep, unwavering conviction. “In the real world... a protector is someone who keeps the monsters away from the innocent. To Mia... and to me... you are the strongest protector this world has ever given us.”

Luca stood quiet for a long time, the cool ocean breeze blowing through his dark hair.

For ten years, he had believed his sole purpose in life was to preserve his father’s legacy, to defend turf, and to maintain control through power and leverage. But looking at Elena, hearing her quiet words of trust, he realized that true power was not measured by how many men feared your name.

It was measured by how safe the innocent felt when standing in your shadow.
