Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the Waterfront

Six months after the fall of Julian Mercer, the waterfront of Port Mercy operated under a quiet, absolute order that had not been seen in twenty years.
The Valente family’s shipping vessels docked without disruption, the local labor unions functioned with transparent efficiency, and the smaller local business owners along Commercial Street no longer paid extortion fees to predatory street gangs. Under Luca’s modernized leadership, the criminal empire his father had built through brute force had transformed into an unassailable corporate powerhouse.
Yet, deep within the dark, fog-shrouded alleys of the harbor district, old debts and lingering grudges still whispered in the shadows.
It was a cold Tuesday afternoon in May.
Luca sat in his spacious corner office on the top floor of the Valente Logistics Building overlooking the harbor docks. Sitting across from him was Dominic Vance, reviewing security deployment logs for an upcoming international cargo transport arriving from Marseilles.
“The docks are completely secured, Luca,” Dominic reported, sliding a blue tablet across the mahogany desk. “We’ve phased out the old guards who were loyal to Mercer. Every shift leader is personally vetted by my team.”
Luca glanced at the digital logs, nodding slowly. “What about the Moretti remnants across the bay?”
“Fractured,” Dominic answered with a cold smile. “Without Mercer feeding them insider information, their captains are squabbling over table scraps. They don't have the manpower or the intelligence to step onto our side of the water.”
Before Luca could respond, his private desk phone buzzed softly.
He pressed the speaker button. “Speak.”
“Mr. Valente,” came the hurried voice of Thomas, the estate’s head butler. “Forgive the interruption, sir, but Mrs. Reyes asked me to contact you immediately.”
Luca’s posture straightened instantly, his eyes narrowing. “Is something wrong with Elena or Mia?”
“No, sir, they are both safe inside the estate,” Thomas assured quickly. “However, a small package was delivered to the main security gate twenty minutes ago. It was addressed personally to 'The Little Detective in the Black Suit.'”
Dominic Vance snapped his head toward Luca, his hand instinctively dropping to the holster concealed beneath his jacket.
“What was in the package, Thomas?” Luca asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.
“Our security team scanned it for explosives and hazardous materials first, sir—it was clean,” Thomas explained. “Inside was a single silver pocket watch... engraved with the crest of the Falcone syndicate from Chicago.”
Luca’s entire body went deathly still.
The Falcone syndicate.
They were the most powerful, ruthless mafia organization in the Midwest—a massive criminal syndicate that had maintained a tense, neutral non-aggression pact with the Valente family for over fifteen years.
“Was there a note?” Luca demanded coldly.
“Yes, sir,” Thomas replied nervously. “It reads: 'We hear the young king of Port Mercy has adopted a soft heart. We arrive on Friday to see if his armor is as thin as his sentiment.'”
Luca slowly leaned back in his leather executive chair, his eyes burning with a cold, lethal fire that made even Dominic Vance hold his breath.
“Dominic,” Luca ordered softly.
“Sir?”
“Call a full assembly of all senior captains for six o'clock tonight,” Luca commanded, his voice vibrating with absolute, terrifying authority. “And double the armed perimeter guards around the estate grounds.”

He reached out, closing the shipping folder on his desk.
“It seems some old men in Chicago need to be reminded why the Valente name rules the East Coast.”
