Chapter 6 - The Trap Begins to Close

The realization hung in the damp air like a heavy anvil.

Elena stood up, pacing the narrow space between the crates, her hands wrapped tightly around her scarf. "We have to get you out of here right now," she urged frantically. "I can help you up the stairs. My car is parked half a mile down the logging road. I can drive you to a safe house, to a hospital, anywhere!"

Dominic shook his head slowly, his expression stoic and unmoving. "No, Elena. Look at me."

He raised his arm, showing the subtle tremor in his fingers, the dark bruises covering his shoulders, and the thick bandages wrapped around his midsection.

"I can barely stand for more than two minutes without passing out," Dominic said softly. "The moment we step outside this cellar, we are in Marcus's domain. He has spotters on the main roads, he has the local precinct in his pocket, and his men are actively looking for any trace of my survival. If we try to run right now, we won't make it two miles before his contractors intercept us."

"So you're just going to sit here and wait for him to come back and finish the job?!" Elena cried, her voice cracking with emotion.

"I am going to sit here and wait for him," Dominic agreed, a terrifyingly sharp smile touching his lips. "But not to die."

He looked up at Elena, his gray eyes burning with the cold, brilliant tactical mind that had built an empire.

"Marcus thinks I am a broken, dying dog chained in a dark room," Dominic said slowly. "He thinks he has already won. Arrogance is his greatest weakness, Elena. It always has been. He will come down those stairs tonight alone, or with at most one guard, to personally deliver the coup de grâce before setting the fire. He won't expect a fight. And he certainly won't expect you."

Elena swallowed hard, her pulse racing. "Me? Dominic, I'm a cleaner! I don't know how to fight mafia hitmen!"

"You don't need to know how to fight," Dominic said softly, reaching out and gently touching her hand. "You just need to be my ghost."

He pulled a small, heavy silver key from beneath his torn shirt collar—a key he had kept hidden in his boot lining that Marcus's men had missed during their rushed search.

"Listen to me very carefully," Dominic instructed, his voice low and commanding. "On the top floor of this mansion, inside the master study, there is a floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookcase on the east wall. Behind the third row of legal volumes on the bottom shelf, there is a hidden wall safe. This key opens it."

Elena listened, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Inside that safe," Dominic continued, "you will find a satellite phone, a loaded 9mm Sig Sauer pistol, and a heavy black USB drive labeled 'AEGIS'. That drive contains the master override encryption keys to Crane Global's financial network. If Marcus doesn't get that drive, his legal transfers mean nothing, and his entire takeover collapses by morning."

"Why didn't Marcus find the safe?" Elena asked, confused.

"Because the safe is reinforced with explosives designed to detonate if forced opened without this specific mechanical key," Dominic explained smoothly. "Marcus knows the safe exists, but he couldn't open it without blowing up the study. He assumed the key was lost when he shot me."

Dominic pressed the small silver key into Elena’s palm, closing her fingers around it.

"I need you to go up to the study, get that phone, that drive, and that gun," Dominic said, looking deep into her eyes. "If you do this for me, Elena... I give you my solemn oath on my life, my honor, and everything I own: Marcus will never touch you or your son again. You will be safe for the rest of your days."

Elena stared at the tiny silver key sitting in her hand. It felt impossibly heavy, cold against her warm skin. She thought of Noah, sleeping peacefully in Mrs. Patterson's apartment. She thought of Marcus’s crushing grip on her throat, and his terrifying threat to destroy her child.

She realized then that there was no running away. As long as Marcus Crane walked the streets of Boston, she and Noah would never truly be safe. Marcus knew her face. He knew she was a witness. The moment he secured his empire, he would hunt her down to eliminate the last loose end.

The hunter was already coming. Her only choice was to help the lion strike first.

Elena tightened her grip around the silver key.

"Show me how to use the gun," she whispered.
