Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Cellar

Down in the dark cellar, Dominic Crane sat with his back pressed against the cold concrete wall.
He had stripped off his blood-stained shirt, exposing his heavily bandaged torso and the long, terrible scars covering his chest. He closed his eyes, breathing slowly, steadily, gathering every ounce of physical strength his battered body possessed.
He heard the heavy front doors open three floors above. He heard the footsteps.
He didn't flinch.
Ten minutes passed. The heavy oak door at the top of the basement stairs creaked open.
A single pair of polished leather shoes began descending the wooden steps, moving with smooth, arrogant deliberation.
Marcus Crane stepped into the yellow glare of the single overhead light bulb, holding a sleek, suppressed pistol in his right hand and his silver leather briefcase in his left. He looked down at the blood-stained floor, his eyes sweeping over the scattered towels and discarded medical wrappers with mild amusement.
"Well, brother," Marcus said smoothly, his voice echoing in the damp space. "It seems your little maid played nurse before she ran away. A touching effort, really. It bought you forty-eight extra hours of agony."
Dominic didn't open his eyes. He sat motionless, resting his head against the concrete wall. "You came alone, Marcus. As arrogant as ever."
Marcus laughed softly, walking closer until he stood ten feet away, aiming the suppressed pistol directly at Dominic’s forehead.
"I didn't need help to dispose of a ghost," Marcus sneered. "The financial transfers completed ten minutes ago. Crane Global is officially mine. The board has acknowledged my appointment as CEO. By midnight, this house will be a pile of ash, and your charred remains will be identified as a tragedy of dry rot and faulty wiring."
Dominic opened his gray eyes. They were cold, clear, and filled with a terrifying, calm certainty that made Marcus hesitate for a fraction of a second.
"You forgot one thing, Marcus," Dominic rasped out softly.
Marcus raised an eyebrow, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "And what is that, dear brother?"
"You forgot that I built this empire," Dominic said quietly. "And I never leave a backdoor unlocked."
Before Marcus could process the words, a loud, sharp voice echoed from the top of the basement stairs.
"DROP THE GUN!"
Marcus spun around in absolute shock.
Standing at the top of the stairs, holding a heavy matte-black Sig Sauer pistol with both hands, was Elena. Her face was pale, her clothes soaked from rain, her body trembling with adrenaline, but her aim was locked dead-center onto Marcus’s chest.
"You..." Marcus spat, his handsome face distorting with sudden, furious rage. "You stupid, worthless little bitch!"
"I said drop it!" Elena yelled, her voice echoing through the cellar like a thunderclap. She disengaged the safety with a loud CLICK, just as Dominic had taught her. "I have the USB drive! I have the satellite phone! The Inspector General's office is already receiving the raw ledger data right now!"
Marcus's eyes widened in sheer panic. His gaze flicked from Elena's gun to the inner pocket of her jacket, realizing in a terrifying flash that his entire financial coup had just been destroyed.
"You ruinous insect!" Marcus roared, swinging his suppressed pistol away from Dominic to aim straight at Elena's chest.

"NOW, ELENA!" Dominic screamed.
Dominic didn't try to stand. He used every ounce of remaining strength in his legs to launch himself forward from the floor like a wounded beast, tackling Marcus straight at the knees.
