Chapter 7 - The Master Study

The main floor of the mansion was terrifyingly dark as Elena crept up the basement stairs at 6:30 PM.

The storm outside had arrived in full force, torrential rain slamming against the grand stained-glass windows, thunder shaking the very foundations of the old house. Flash illumination cut through the gloom every few seconds, casting long, monstrous shadows across the dusty hardwood corridors.

Elena held her breath, moving with absolute silence. She carried her tactical flashlight in her left hand and the silver key squeezed tightly in her right.

She climbed the grand mahogany staircase to the third floor, her rubber soles making no sound against the thick carpet runner. She found the master study at the far end of the west wing—a massive, vaulted room lined with thousands of leather-bound books, an ornate marble fireplace, and a massive executive desk overlooking the stormy grounds below.

She sprinted to the east wall, shining her beam over the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookcase.

Third row from the bottom. Legal volumes, she remembered Dominic's precise instructions.

She pulled out five thick red law books, exposing a dark, steel-reinforced wall safe set deep into the brickwork. A small mechanical keyhole sat right beneath a flashing red status indicator light.

Elena’s hands shook as she inserted the silver key into the lock. She turned it clockwise until she heard a solid, heavy CLICK-CLACK of heavy iron bolts retracting.

The heavy steel door swung open smoothly.

Inside lay three items: a sleek black satellite communications phone, a high-capacity encrypted USB drive, and a matte-black Sig Sauer 9mm handgun resting beside two spare magazines.

Elena reached in and pulled out the gun first. It was surprisingly heavy, cold, and lethal. She remembered Dominic’s quick five-minute tutorial in the basement: Safety lever off. Rack the slide once to chamber a round. Point at center mass. Squeeze the trigger softly.

She checked the magazine—it was fully loaded with fifteen rounds of hollow-point ammunition. She racked the slide back with a sharp, metallic CLACK, engaged the safety, and tucked the weapon securely into the front pocket of her heavy jacket. She grabbed the USB drive and the satellite phone, shoving them into her inner pocket.

Suddenly, a brilliant flash of lightning illuminated the courtyard below the study window.

Elena walked over to the window and looked down through the rain-streaked glass.

Two pairs of bright headlights were coming up the long, cracked driveway.

Two heavy black SUVs pulled to a stop directly in front of the mansion's main steps. Four men in dark tactical coats emerged, carrying heavy duffel bags—the equipment meant to burn the mansion to the ground.

From the lead SUV stepped Marcus Crane. He was wearing his charcoal trench coat, holding a sleek silver briefcase, looking entirely relaxed and triumphant.

"They're here," Elena whispered, her blood running cold.

She backed away from the window, turning toward the study door.

She had to get back down to the basement before Marcus and his men reached the cellar. But as she stepped into the corridor, she heard the heavy front doors below swing open with a loud slam, followed by the sound of heavy boots echoing in the grand foyer.

"Clear the upper floors first!" Marcus's voice boomed from the ground level. "Set the accelerant charges in the master bedrooms! I'm going down to the cellar to finish my brother!"

Elena froze in the dark third-floor hallway.

The contractors were heading up the stairs toward her. The basement path was blocked.

She was trapped.
