Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Serpent

CRASH!

Dominic's 200-pound frame slammed into Marcus’s legs with devastating force.

Marcus shrieked as his balance was destroyed, his pistol discharging wildly into the ceiling rafters—POW! POW!—shattering plaster and wood across the stairwell. Both brothers crashed heavily onto the hard concrete floor in a chaotic flurry of limbs, blood, and rage.

Marcus recovered quickly, his youthful strength giving him an immediate advantage over his battered brother. He drove a hard elbow straight into Dominic's freshly bandaged ribs.

"AGH!" Dominic gasped, a white-hot wave of agony blinding his vision as his stitches tore open.

Marcus scrambled on top of him, his face twisted into a demonic mask of fury. He brought the heavy metal butt of his pistol down toward Dominic's temple, intending to crush his skull.

"NO!" Elena screamed.

She sprinted down the stairs, dropped the heavy flashlight, and grabbed a rusty iron pipe lying beside the tool crate. She swung it with all the strength in her body, slamming the heavy iron bar directly into the side of Marcus’s face.

CRACK!

Marcus let out a bloody howl as his cheekbone shattered under the impact. He was knocked sideways off Dominic, dropping his suppressed pistol onto the wet concrete floor.

Marcus scrambled onto his hands and knees, blood pouring from his face, his cold gray eyes wild with murderous frenzy. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling a long, wicked tactical blade, and lunged straight toward Elena’s throat.

"I'LL KILL YOU!" he screamed.

Elena backed up, her foot catching on a wooden crate. She fell backward onto the concrete floor, the Sig Sauer dropping from her hand and sliding across the wet floor—stopping right beside Dominic’s reaching fingers.

Marcus hovered over Elena, raising the heavy blade high into the air, his bloody face inches from hers. "You ruined my life!" he shrieked.

CLICK.

The cold sound of a heavy slide racking echoed through the cellar.

Marcus froze, his blade hovering inches above Elena's chest.

He slowly turned his head.

Dominic Crane was standing.

He was leaning his heavy weight against a wooden support pillar, blood soaking through his shirt, but his hands were steady as a rock. He held the Sig Sauer pistol extended in a perfect, military two-handed grip, the barrel pointed directly between Marcus’s gray eyes.

The silence in the basement was absolute, punctuated only by the distant rumble of thunder and Marcus's ragged breathing.

"Put the knife down, Marcus," Dominic said, his voice flat, emotionless, and cold as arctic ice.

Marcus stared into his brother's eyes. He saw no mercy there. No brotherly affection. No lingering hesitation. He saw only the apex predator he had tried and failed to destroy.

Marcus slowly let the tactical knife slip from his trembling fingers. It clattered uselessly onto the concrete floor.

"Dominic... please," Marcus whimpered, his terrifying confidence completely evaporating, replaced by the pathetic cowardice of a defeated bully. "We're brothers... same blood... our father made us this way..."

"Our father made you a monster," Dominic corrected quietly. "You made yourself a fool."

Dominic didn't pull the trigger.

Instead, the thunderous sound of heavy tactical boots echoed from the floor above, followed by the blinding glare of high-powered spotlights flooding through the cellar vents.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE!" dozens of voices boomed from the top of the stairs.

A dozen fully armed FBI tactical officers flooded down the stairwell, their laser sights painting Marcus's chest in bright red dots. Behind them stood Ben Vance—Dominic's trusted chief of security, holding the satellite receiver Elena had activated ten minutes earlier from the master study.

"Secure the perimeter! Get medical in here now!" Vance ordered.

Two tactical agents tackled Marcus to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. Marcus screamed in rage and agony as he was dragged up the stairs, his empire, his freedom, and his life stripped away forever.

Dominic slowly lowered the pistol, engaged the safety, and dropped the weapon onto a nearby crate.

His knees buckled.

Elena scrambled forward, catching his massive frame before he hit the concrete, pulling his heavy head against her shoulder as he collapsed into exhaustion.

"It's over," Elena whispered, tears of relief pouring down her face. "It's over, Dominic."

May you like

Dominic looked up at her through fading vision, a genuine, soft smile touching his pale lips for the first time.

"Thank you... my ghost," he whispered, before closing his eyes and letting the darkness take him into safety.
