Chapter 3 - The Shadow Alliance

Adrian finished wrapping the bandage around her hand, tying the small cloth strip into a tight, professional knot. He didn't release her hand immediately; his fingers rested against her pulse, resting in the quiet understanding that had instantly formed between them.
"Vanessa's father owes twenty million dollars to Cruz's syndicate," Adrian said, his voice flat and dangerous. "I knew about the debt. I didn't know about the missiles."
"The marriage was never about joining two wealthy families," Claire said, pulling her hand back slowly. "Vanessa’s father offered her to you to settle his debt. But Cruz didn't want money. He wanted your shipping ports. He wanted your name, your logistics, and your access to the Canadian border."
"And if I marry Vanessa, her family gets fifty percent voting control over my maritime operations," Adrian murmured, his eyes looking past her toward the silver lake outside the windows. "They don't intend for me to survive the wedding night, do they?"
"No," Claire said concisely. "You were supposed to die during the reception on Saturday. An apparent heart failure or an accidental overdose. The Carlisle family takes over the estate, Cruz takes the ports, and the Moretti empire is dismantled from the inside."
Leo stepped up to the table, his face flushed with anger and embarrassment. "Boss... I swear to God, I didn't know about Marcus or the catering staff. I checked every background file myself!"
"Cruz has military-grade intelligence capabilities, Leo," Claire pointed out, turning her head toward the security chief. "They didn't buy Marcus with money. They found something on him. A family member, a debt, or a hostage. Check his sister's address in Milwaukee. I'll bet ten thousand dollars she hasn't answered her phone in forty-eight hours."
Leo pulled out his phone immediately, stepping away to make the call.
Adrian stood up from his chair. He was broad-shouldered, six-foot-two, and carried himself with the dense, dangerous mass of a man who had survived dozens of street wars before taking over his family's throne. He walked to the grand French windows, looking out at the cold silver water of Lake Ashford.
"You've known this for how long?" Adrian asked without turning around.
"I knew about Cruz three weeks ago," Claire replied, standing up from her seat. "I stayed in this house to find the physical evidence connecting Cruz to the missile broker. I found it last night."
Adrian turned around slowly, his eyebrows raised. "Where?"
"In Vanessa's luggage," Claire said smoothly. "She has a satellite phone tucked inside the lining of her cosmetics bag. The encryption key matches the military frequency used by Cruz's primary lieutenant."
Adrian let out a quiet, dark laugh. "You breached my fiancée's private suite, decrypted her secure comms, and diagnosed my entire security breach while serving orange juice?"
"I served coffee today, sir," Claire corrected him dryly. "And I took a pay cut to do it."
For the first time since she had met him, Adrian Moretti let out a genuine, deep laugh that echoed through the vast, empty dining room. It transformed his face—erasing the cold, terrifying mafia boss and revealing a man of immense charm, warmth, and lethal intelligence.
"Miss Bennett," Adrian said, stepping toward her until he was standing directly in front of her gray uniform. "You are officially relieved of your cleaning duties."
"I have two more guest rooms on the third floor, Mr. Moretti," she said with a deadpan expression.
"Leave the dust," Adrian commanded gently. He reached out, his thumb lightly brushing against her chin, lifting her face so her clear blue eyes met his dark brown ones. "Starting right now, you are my chief security tactical advisor. You will be paid fifty thousand dollars a month, you will wear real clothes, and you will help me tear Victor Cruz's world into microscopic pieces."
Claire stared at him. She felt a strange, electric current pass through her skin where his thumb touched her jaw. For three years, she had lived as a ghost—driven entirely by vengeance, living in cheap motels, wearing gray aprons, and hiding in the shadows.
For the first time in thirty-six months, someone looked at her not as a broken soldier or a servant, but as an absolute equal.
"And what about Vanessa?" Claire asked softly.
May you like
Adrian's expression turned to ice, his eyes hardening into dark, lethal obsidian.
"Vanessa wants a wedding," Adrian murmured, his lips curving into a terrifyingly beautiful smile. "We're going to give her one she will never forget."
