Chapter 6 - The Rehearsal Dinner

At 7:30 p.m., the grand dining room of the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden glow of three massive crystal chandeliers.

Twenty-three guests sat around the long mahogany table, dressed in expensive black-tie attire. Champagne flowed from silver buckets, laughter echoed off the high painted ceilings, and servants in gray uniforms walked discreetly around the perimeter, refilling wine glasses and carrying silver trays of caviar.

At the head of the table sat Adrian, looking regal and terrifyingly calm in a tailored black tuxedo.

To his right sat Vanessa, radiant in an off-the-shoulder white dress, her diamond necklace catching the light with every move. She was laughing loudly at a joke made by her father, her cheeks flushed with excitement, her eyes darting repeatedly toward the tall grandfather clock in the corner of the room.

7:52 p.m.

Eight minutes until Cruz's strike team breached the boathouse.

Standing discreetly in the shadows near the courtyard doors—dressed in a sharp black suit that blended seamlessly with the security detail—was Claire. Her Sig Sauer sat snugly beneath her left arm, her right hand resting casually near her waist.

Her earpiece buzzed softly.

"Captain," Leo's voice chimed in her ear. "Tactical team in Milwaukee just secured Marcus's sister. She's in a safehouse with two of our officers. Marcus has been notified."

Claire tapped her collar button twice. Received.

Across the room, Marcus—the security officer standing near the east French windows—subtly shifted his stance. He looked toward Claire, giving her a single, sharp nod of his head. He was back on their side.

7:56 p.m.

Vanessa lifted her silver bell, striking it gently against her glass to call for attention.

"Everyone!" Vanessa announced, standing up with her champagne flute raised high. "I want to propose a toast to my handsome fiancé, Adrian."

The guests clapped, turning their eyes toward the head of the table.

Vanessa smiled down at Adrian, her eyes filled with a terrifying, false affection. "To Adrian. A man of few words, but immense power. May our union bring prosperity, strength, and an unbreakable alliance to both our families."

"To Adrian and Vanessa!" the guests echoed, raising their glasses.

Adrian didn't lift his glass. He sat perfectly still, his hands folded over his plate, his dark eyes locked onto Vanessa's glowing face.

"Thank you, Vanessa," Adrian said smoothly, his baritone voice easily cutting through the room's murmur. "That was a very touching speech."

He stood up slowly, adjusting his black cuffs.

"Before we drink," Adrian continued, sweeping his gaze across the twenty-three people at the table, "I have a small announcement of my own."

Vanessa’s smile faltered slightly. "Adrian? We have the second course arriving—"

"It won't take long," Adrian interrupted calmly. He reached into his inner breast pocket and pulled out a small, sleek electronic device—a military-grade signal jammer. He pressed the red button on its side.

A low, high-pitched electronic whine vibrated through the room for a split second before every cell phone, tablet, and smart device on the table went completely dead.

Vanessa gasped, looking down at her clutch bag on the table as her satellite phone lost its signal completely.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa's father demanded, standing up from his seat near the center of the table. "Adrian, what are you doing?"

"I am securing my house, Arthur," Adrian said flatly.

7:59 p.m.

Outside the heavy French windows, the quiet autumn night was suddenly shattered by the muffled thump-thump-thump of heavy tactical boots sprinting across the gravel patio.

Vanessa’s eyes lit up with sudden, vicious triumph. She stepped away from Adrian, reaching into her clutch bag to pull out a small silver whistle to signal her cousin Julian.

"It's over, Adrian!" Vanessa shouted, her elegant demeanor completely shattering into a mask of pure greed. "The perimeter is down! Victor Cruz’s team is outside those doors!"

The guests screamed, several women dropping their glasses, pushing their chairs back in absolute panic.

Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't even look at the windows. He looked directly at Claire standing in the shadows.

"Claire," Adrian commanded softly. "Execute."
