Chapter 9 - The New Foundation

Claire closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath.
For three years, she had carried the heavy armor of a soldier seeking justice—never allowing anyone to touch her heart, never letting down her guard, living as a nameless ghost in a cold world.
In one single day, this terrifying, powerful mafia boss had seen right through her armor, bandaged her wounds with his own hands, and offered her a place at his side where she would never have to hide again.
She turned her head, her blue eyes meeting his dark ones.
"I don't know how to be a mob boss's partner, Adrian," Claire admitted softly. "I know how to sweep perimeters and clear rooms."
Adrian let out a soft, beautiful laugh, his hand sliding up from her wrist to cup her face, his warm fingers resting against her temple.
"Good," Adrian murmured, his thumb caressing her cheek. "Because I don't need a mob boss's partner. I need a woman who isn't afraid to look me in the eye and tell me when the leather handle is cut."
Claire smiled—a real, radiant smile that swept away the last lingering shadows of her past.
She raised her left hand, resting her palm against his cheek, feeling the warm, strong line of his jaw beneath her fingers.
"Then I stay," Claire whispered.
Adrian didn't wait another second. He pulled her toward him and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, fierce, and breathless kiss that tasted of rich scotch, autumn rain, and absolute victory.

Claire wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling his heavy frame flush against hers, surrendering completely to the intoxicating warmth of his kiss.
The grand dining room—once a stage for cruelty, deception, and hidden blades—became the birthplace of an unbreakable alliance built on iron trust, fierce loyalty, and mutual respect.
