Chapter 4 - The Changing of the Guard

By 1:00 p.m., the dynamic inside the Moretti estate had completely shifted, though to the twenty-three guests staying on the second floor, nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

Claire was moved from the small, cramped servant quarters above the garage to a grand guest suite on the east wing—three doors down from Adrian's private apartment.

When she walked into the room, she found two large rolling racks filled with clothing waiting for her, brought directly from an upscale boutique in downtown Chicago by two of Adrian's trusted men. There were dark silk trousers, crisp white button-down shirts, tailored wool jackets, and tactical leather boots that fit her feet perfectly.

On the bed lay a sleek, black polymer holster containing a brand-new Sig Sauer P320 with three loaded magazines, alongside an encrypted tactical earpiece.

Claire set her gray apron on the foot of the bed. She peeled off her worn maid shoes and stepped into the shower, washing away seven months of grease, floor polish, and servant humility.

When she stepped out, she dried her dark hair, pulled it back into a tight, professional knot at the nape of her neck, and put on a pair of tailored charcoal trousers, a crisp black silk shirt, and the leather shoulder holster. She strapped the Sig Sauer under her left arm, covered it with a fitted dark wool blazer, and adjusted her earpiece.

She looked into the full-length mirror.

The maid was gone. The ghost was gone. Standing in the frame was Captain Claire Bennett, Special Reconnaissance.

Her door opened without a knock.

Adrian stood in the hallway, dressed in a custom charcoal suit that matched hers, his dark tie fastened tight. He stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes sweeping over her from her polished leather boots to her sharp, blue eyes. A slow, appreciative smile touched his lips.

"Better," Adrian murmured, leaning against the doorframe. "Much better."

"The holster rides slightly high on the left," Claire noted, adjusting her lapel. "But it's functional."

"Leo confirmed your suspicion," Adrian said, his tone turning businesslike as he stepped into her room and closed the door behind him. "Marcus’s sister was taken from her apartment in Milwaukee forty-eight hours ago. Cruz's men are holding her at a warehouse near the docks."

Claire nodded. "That's why Marcus moved his watch. He was given a deadline. Cruz told him to disable the perimeter cameras by 8:00 p.m. tonight during the rehearsal dinner."

"Leo sent a tactical unit to Milwaukee twenty minutes ago," Adrian continued, walking over to stand beside her near the window. "We will have Marcus’s sister clear of the building by 6:00 p.m. Once she's safe, Marcus is ours again."

Claire turned her head, looking up at him. Adrian was standing remarkably close—close enough for her to catch the rich, intoxicating scent of sandalwood, leather, and expensive espresso that clung to him.

"And Vanessa?" Claire asked. "She’s currently downstairs in the conservatory complaining to her mother that you haven't apologized for dismissing her from breakfast."

"Let her complain," Adrian said softly, his dark eyes fixing on Claire’s lips before rising back to her eyes. "Vanessa thinks she’s playing a game of chess where she holds all the royal pieces. She doesn't realize she's sitting at a table with two people who prefer to burn the board."

Claire felt a sudden, sharp heat rise in her chest. She was used to commanding men in tactical gear, but Adrian Moretti carried a different kind of authority—an overwhelming, magnetic power that seemed to compress the air around them.

"You're very comfortable with chaos, Mr. Moretti," she observed quietly.

"Call me Adrian," he commanded softly, taking a single step closer until his chest almost brushed hers. "And I'm not comfortable with chaos, Claire. I'm comfortable with control. And right now, holding this room with you is the most control I've felt in five years."

Before Claire could answer, her earpiece chimed with a soft, electronic beep.

Leo’s voice cut through the wire: "Boss. Captain. Vanessa just left her suite. She's heading down the west corridor toward the library. She's carrying her cosmetics bag."

Claire’s eyes sharpened instantly. The soldier returned in a fraction of a second.

"She's making her mid-day transmission to Cruz," Claire told Adrian. "She thinks the west hallway is still a blind spot because she cut my tray this morning."

Adrian reached out, his warm, heavy hand catching Claire’s gloved right hand, squeezing it gently.

"Lead the way, Captain," Adrian whispered. "Let's go watch my fiancée commit high treason."
