Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New House

Three months later.
The icy winter had finally given way to early spring in Chicago. Sunlight melted the snow along the shores of Lake Michigan, filling the air with the crisp scent of fresh rain and blooming trees.
Ava stood in the newly renovated nursery on the second floor of the Lincoln Park estate. The walls were painted a soft sage green, lit by warm sunlight streaming through the large bay window. A handcrafted wooden crib sat in the center of the room.
Hands wrapped gently around her waist from behind.
Ava leaned back against Daniel’s broad chest, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat. She placed her hands over his long fingers, which were resting gently over her visibly rounded belly.
She was five months pregnant now.
"The council unanimously ratified the new logistics charter this morning," Daniel whispered into her hair, his tone relaxed and peaceful—a sound Ava had never heard during her first weeks in this house. "The Detroit capos have fully surrendered their divisions. Meridian is completely secure."
"And Arthur?" Ava asked softly.
"He is living in a small village in northern Italy under permanent guard," Daniel said. "He will never set foot in America again."
Daniel turned Ava around gently so she was facing him. He looked younger now. The dark circles under his eyes were gone, replaced by a deep, calm strength. The dark tiger tattoo on his neck was partially covered by the soft collar of a cashmere sweater—he no longer wore his suit armor inside their home.
He reached down, placing his warm palm against her stomach. As if responding to his touch, the baby gave a distinct, sharp kick.
Daniel’s eyes widened in awe, a soft, breathy laugh escaping his lips—a sound so pure and human it made Ava's eyes mist with tears.
"He's strong," Daniel murmured, kneeling down in front of her, resting his forehead against her bump. "Our son is strong."
"Or daughter," Ava smiled, running her fingers through his dark hair.
Daniel looked up at her, his dark eyes filled with a fierce, unwavering devotion. "Son or daughter, they will never know the fear I grew up with. They will know only love. And they will know that their mother saved this family."
He stood up, taking her face in his scarred hands, and pulled her into a tender, deep kiss that erased every lingering memory of the contract, the debt, and the fear that had brought them together.
Ava Bennett had been forced into a marriage with a dangerous mob boss to pay a debt.

But standing in the warm sunlight of their home, feeling their child kick between them, she knew she was no longer a captive. She was the queen of the Choi empire, the keeper of his heart, and the mother of a miracle that had rewritten their destiny forever.
