Chapter 2 - The Shadow Council

The headquarters of Choi Meridian Holdings occupied the top three floors of a sleek glass skyscraper in Chicago’s financial district. From the executive boardroom, one could look out over the entirety of the city’s shipping ports—the arteries through which billions of dollars in legal cargo and illegal contraband flowed every year.
Daniel sat at the head of the obsidian conference table. To his left sat his uncle, Arthur Choi, an older man with silver hair, sharp features, and eyes as cold as tungsten. To his right sat Victoria Vance, the syndicate's chief legal counsel. Around them sat the five regional capos who managed the family's interests across the Midwest.
"The Detroit shipment was intercepted by federal agents on Tuesday," Arthur said, tossing a tablet onto the table. "Two million dollars in specialized hardware gone, Daniel. And now I hear rumors that you're distracted by your new wife."
Daniel didn't flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. "The Detroit bust was a leak from your division, Arthur. Don't project your administrative failures onto my marriage."
"Your marriage was a business transaction to secure the Bennett land rights near the port!" Arthur snapped, leaning forward, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "A girl from Baltimore whose father was drowning in debt. You brought a civilian into this house, Daniel. A woman who knows nothing of our laws. And worse—she provides no continuity for the Choi bloodline."
The room went dead silent. The capos exchanged nervous glances.
Every man in the room knew about Daniel's medical condition. It was the primary political vulnerability Arthur used to question Daniel's long-term legitimacy as the Don. A leader who could not produce an heir was a dead end. In their world, power required blood continuity.
Victoria Vance cleared her throat, breaking the tension. "Mrs. Choi's presence is legally sound, Arthur. The Bennett family’s commercial properties have already been successfully integrated into our port expansion logistics. The transaction served its purpose."
"And what happens when Daniel grows old?" Arthur challenged, staring directly at his nephew. "Who inherits Meridian? Your cousin Julian? Or do we let the syndicate fracture into civil war because our Don cannot leave behind an heir?"
Daniel stood up slowly. The simple action carried enough physical menace to cause two capos to imperceptibly brace themselves.
"My health is not up for debate in this council, Uncle," Daniel said softly, his tone laced with razor-sharp authority. "Meridian is stronger now than it was when my father died. If anyone in this room believes my lack of an heir makes me weak, they are welcome to challenge my position according to the old code."
No one moved. Even Arthur sneered and looked away, knowing he didn't have the muscle to challenge Daniel in open combat.
"Meeting adjourned," Daniel commanded.
As the capos filed out of the room, Daniel signaled for Victoria to stay behind. The heavy double doors closed, leaving only the Don and his lawyer in the room.
"You look tired, Daniel," Victoria remarked, taking off her glasses and wiping them with a silk cloth.
"Send a private medical team to the Lincoln Park house tomorrow morning," Daniel ordered quietly, looking out the window at the rain-soaked skyline.
Victoria paused. "Dr. Kang?"
"No. An outside team. Discrete. I want a full blood panel done on Ava."
Victoria raised an eyebrow. "Is she ill?"
"She was sick this morning. She tried to hide it from me," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with unspoken thoughts. "Ava is terrible at lying. When she lies, her breath catches in her throat, and she refuses to meet my eye. Something is wrong, Victoria. She has been acting strangely ever since..." He stopped himself.

"Ever since the night in your study?" Victoria finished pragmatically. "Daniel, you know what the medical realities are. If she is experiencing symptoms of anything, it is likely stress. Being thrust into this world takes a psychological toll."
"Just send the medical team," Daniel said firmly. "I need to know what she is hiding."
