Chapter 8 - The Shadow over the Gala

The Drake Hotel's Grand Ballroom was a magnificent sea of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and black-tie elegance. Chicago’s high society, corrupt politicians, and high-ranking mobsters mingled over vintage champagne while a string quartet played softly in the corner.

Daniel Choi stood near the grand staircase, looking formidable in a custom black tuxedo. But his attention was entirely focused on the top of the stairs.

When Ava descended, the entire room seemed to fall silent for a fraction of a second.

She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that draped gracefully over her body, concealing the subtle, early changes in her silhouette. Her dark hair was styled in elegant waves, and a diamond necklace—a gift from Daniel that morning—glittered against her collarbone.

She looked radiant, but her eyes were determined.

Daniel offered her his arm as she reached the bottom step. "You look breathtaking, Ava," he murmured, his voice rich with sincere admiration.

"Thank you, Daniel," she whispered, slipping her hand into the crook of his arm. "Are you ready for tonight?"

"With you by my side? Yes," Daniel said quietly.

Across the room, standing near a towering champagne pyramid, Arthur Choi was watching them like a vulture. He caught Ava's eye and raised his glass in a silent, ominous toast. The forty-eight hours were up.

Ava leaned close to Daniel. "Daniel, I need you to listen to me very carefully. Do not drink anything offered by your uncle tonight. And whatever happens... trust me."

Daniel frowned, his eyes darkening instantly. "Ava, what do you know?"

Before she could answer, Arthur walked over, flanked by three senior capos from the Detroit faction.

"Nephew! Ava!" Arthur said loudly, drawing the attention of nearby guests. "A magnificent turnout tonight. Truly a triumph for Meridian."

"Arthur," Daniel said coldly, stepping slightly in front of Ava. "I thought you were busy managing the Detroit situation."

"Oh, Detroit is taken care of," Arthur smiled sinisterly. "In fact, I was just speaking with Capo Moretti here about the future of our leadership. We were discussing how important stability and bloodline continuity are for the syndicate's confidence."

The capos around Arthur shifted uncomfortably, sensing the impending storm.

Arthur turned his gaze directly to Ava. "Speaking of continuity... Mrs. Choi, you look particularly glowing tonight. Perhaps you have some news you'd like to share with the council?"

The air in the circle turned to ice.

Daniel's hand moved imperceptibly toward his left jacket lapel, his posture shifting into a lethal combat stance. "What are you playing at, Arthur?"

"I'm not playing at anything, Daniel," Arthur said, pulling a white document folder from his coat. "I am simply protecting this family from dishonor. Your wife visited a community clinic in West Town three days ago under a fake name. I have her medical file right here."

Gasps echoed from the surrounding guests as nearby capos stepped closer, realizing a confrontation was taking place.

Arthur opened the folder and held up a copy of the clinic report. "Ava Choi is pregnant. And since we all know my dear nephew Daniel is medically sterile... this woman is an adulteress who has brought a bastard into the Choi house!"
