Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom went completely dead silent. The string quartet stopped playing. Marcus and four of Daniel’s personal security guards immediately drew their concealed weapons, while Arthur's men did the same.
Guests began quietly backing away toward the exits, terrified of the impending bloodshed.
Daniel did not pull his gun. He stood perfectly still, his face an unreadable mask of absolute stone. But the muscle ticking violently in his jaw betrayed the devastating shock tearing through his soul.
He slowly turned his head to look at Ava.
His eyes were filled with a raw, agonizing betrayal that broke Ava's heart.
"Ava..." Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper, lower than a growl. "Is this true?"
Arthur smirked triumphantly. "She can't deny it, Daniel! I have the clinic records! The old code demands her execution—"
"SILENCE!" Daniel roared, the sheer power of his command echoing off the gold-leaf ceiling, making even the veteran capos flinch.
Daniel kept his eyes locked on Ava. "Did you go to that clinic?"
"Yes," Ava said clearly, her voice echoing across the silent room. She didn't flinch. She didn't look down. She looked directly into the eyes of the man she had come to love. "I went to the clinic. And I am pregnant."
A collective murmur rippled through the capos.
"She admits it!" Arthur shouted, reaching for his weapon. "Kill her!"
"Touch her and I will strip your flesh from your bones, Arthur!" Daniel snarled, stepping fully between Arthur's men and Ava, his hand resting on his weapon now. His heart was bleeding, but his instinct to protect her was absolute. "If she dies, it will be by my hand, not yours!"
"Daniel, wait!" Ava shouted, stepping forward and pulling a folded sheaf of papers from her small clutch purse. She thrust them directly into the hands of Victoria Vance, who was standing nearby in shock.
"Victoria! Read page three!" Ava commanded. "Read the original Italian medical report from the Milan clinic eight years ago!"
Victoria rapidly un-folded the papers, her sharp legal eyes scanning the Italian text. As she read, her face drained of all color.
"My God..." Victoria whispered, looking up in horror at Arthur.
"What is it, Victoria?" Daniel demanded, his voice dangerously low.
"Daniel..." Victoria said, her hand trembling. "The translation report Arthur provided to the board eight years ago was forged. The original San Raffaele surgical records state that your reproductive trauma was temporary. The doctors predicted a full recovery within five years."
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Daniel froze. The world seemed to stop spinning. "What?"
"Arthur forged your medical records!" Ava cried out, tears streaming down her face. "He paid off the translators in Milan so you would believe you were sterile! He wanted to ensure you never had an heir, so that his son Julian would inherit Meridian when you died! He lied to you, Daniel! He lied to you for eight years!"
Daniel turned slowly toward his uncle. The agony in his eyes vanished, replaced by an infernal, demonic rage that sent a wave of pure terror through Arthur Choi.
"You..." Daniel whispered.
Arthur’s face turned pale as paper. "She's lying! It's a fake document! She forged it to save her own skin!"
"I didn't forge it," Ava said coldly. "The document carries the official digital notary stamp of the Italian Ministry of Health. Victoria can verify the serial number right now."
Victoria pulled out her tablet, scanned the QR code on the page, and looked up three seconds later. "It's authentic, Daniel. The original file is stored in the Milan hospital archives under your real name."
Daniel looked back at Ava. His eyes drifted down to her stomach, then back up to her face.
The baby was his.
The miracle wasn't a lie. The baby growing inside her was his blood, his child, his heir—born from the only night they had shared.
"Marcus," Daniel said softly, his voice devoid of any human emotion.
"Yes, Don Choi?" Marcus replied, stepping forward with his weapon drawn.
"Disarm my uncle and his men. If any of them resist, execute them on this floor."
Within three seconds, before Arthur's bodyguards could even react, Daniel’s loyal security team tackled them to the marble floor, stripping them of their weapons. Arthur was thrown to his knees in front of Daniel, his silver-headed cane clattering across the floor.
"Daniel! Please! I am your blood! I am your father's brother!" Arthur screamed, begging for his life.
Daniel looked down at his uncle with absolute disgust. "You stole eight years of my life. You made me believe I was broken. And then you tried to murder my wife and my unborn child."
Daniel pulled a sleek black pistol from his jacket holster, chambering a round with a cold, metallic click.
"Daniel, no!" Ava called out gently, stepping up beside him and placing her hand over his trembling gun arm.
Daniel looked at her, his eyes wild with rage.
"Don't do this here," Ava whispered, holding his gaze. "Don't let him ruin the beginning of our child's life with more blood on your hands. Let the council deal with him according to your laws."
Daniel stared into Ava's hazel eyes. The fiery rage within him slowly began to cool, tamed by the gentle touch of the woman who had saved his legacy.
He lowered the gun.

"Capo Moretti," Daniel commanded, looking at the head of the Detroit faction. "Take my uncle to the basement at the docks. Strip him of all Meridian assets. He will spend the rest of his days in exile."
"Understood, Don Choi," Moretti said, bowing his head in deep respect before dragging the screaming Arthur out of the ballroom.
