Chapter 5 - The Shattered Silence

Harper held her breath as Kane’s weight settled fully against her legs.

He was immensely heavy, his broad back rising and falling with deep, rhythmic inhalations. One of his large, scarred hands rested open on the velvet cushions near her knee, the fingers relaxed for the first time in memory. The terrifying golden glow behind his eyelids had faded entirely, leaving his handsome face peaceful, stripped of the lines of agony that had carved into his skin.

Harper carefully rested her hands on her own lap, trying not to make any sudden movements. Her legs quickly went slightly numb under his weight, but she didn't care.

Outside, the storm reached its peak. Thunder cracked across the coastal sky, rattling the thick glass panes. In the past, such violent noises would have triggered Kane's broken wolf into an immediate rage. But now, anchored by Harper’s steady heartbeat and scent of cedar and rain, he merely let out a low, contented rumble deep in his chest—a sound remarkably close to a wolf's purr—and pulled himself slightly closer to her warmth.

Harper looked down at him, her fingers twitching with the urge to brush a stray lock of dark hair away from his forehead. She resisted at first, but then softly let her fingertips touch his hair.

He didn't pull away. He relaxed further, his breathing deepening.

"You poor, lonely brute," she whispered softly into the quiet room.

While Kane slept, Harper’s mind raced through the maze of political landmines waiting outside those iron doors. She knew this night was supposed to be a test of survival, a cruel public spectacle meant to prove Kane’s unfitness or force Cascade into absolute poverty.

Her father had expected her to fail. Richard had likely already drafted his tearful press release about his brave daughter being terrorized by the King, hoping to garner public sympathy to erase his debts. Vivian Mercer had expected her to break within an hour, using Harper's failure to push for Kane’s removal from the High Council on grounds of instability.

They had built an entire ecosystem of lies around Kane’s madness. They needed him to be a monster so they could justify their own greed and corruption.

Hours passed in quiet solitude.

Around four in the morning, Kane shifted. With a low, sleepy murmur, his long arm reached out, wrapping securely around Harper’s waist. Before she could react, he pulled her down onto the wide couch alongside him, tucking her small frame against his solid, warm chest.

Harper gasped lightly, her face burying into the soft fabric of his shirt. He was impossibly warm, smelling of cedarwood, cold rain, and pure dark ozone. His massive arm locked around her back like an iron band, holding her close, seeking her peaceful aura like a dying man clinging to life.

Harper froze for a moment, her heart fluttering violently against her ribs—not out of fear, but out of an overwhelming, dizzying rush of sudden intimacy.

She looked up at his sleeping face. His features were softened by sleep, his breathing steady and synchronized with hers. Her wolf, far from screaming, snuggled down into the quiet warmth of his presence, feeling safer than she had in years.

Slowly, Harper relaxed into his embrace. She closed her eyes, resting her head against his chest, listening to the strong, steady thud of the King's heart.

And there, tucked inside the arms of the monster everyone feared, Harper fell deeply asleep.
