Chapter 7 - The Unlocking

At precisely six o'clock in the morning, the heavy pneumatic locks of the private wing disengaged with a loud, echoey hiss.
Outside in the gallery, a small crowd had gathered.
Vivian Mercer stood at the front, clutching her hot coffee, her pale-blond hair perfectly styled, a satisfied, smug smile touching her lips. Beside her stood two medical attendants holding open leather cases filled with sedatives, ready to rush in. Gideon Locke stood off to the side, his broad face grim, his eyes fixed on the heavy iron doors with dark foreboding.
"Be ready with the restraint straps," Vivian instructed the medical team coldly. "Richard Hayes’s daughter likely lost her mind three hours ago. I want her removed quietly through the rear exit before the press council arrives."
"We don't know that yet, Vivian," Gideon said quietly, though his own heart was heavy. He had prayed the quiet girl from Cascade would pull off a miracle, but logic told him no one survived Kane's unbridled aura for six hours straight.
"Oh, please, Gideon," Vivian sneered, taking a sip of her coffee. "She’s a nobody from a destitute pack. She probably hit the floor within forty minutes. The only reason she didn't press the panic button is likely because she fainted."
The massive brushed-iron doors slowly creaked open, swinging outward into the lit gallery.
The entire hallway went dead silent.
Standing in the doorway was Kane Croft.
He was not bloodied. He was not raging. He was not trembling with violent, golden fury.
He wore a pristine, dark tailored suit, his shirt crisply buttoned, his posture towering and absolute. His eyes were their natural, striking warm amber—clear, focused, and intensely sharp. The suffocating, toxic aura that usually swept through the hallway like a wave of heat was completely contained, wrapped tightly around his imposing frame in perfect, effortless mastery.
The medical attendants froze, their mouths agape.
Vivian stared at him, her coffee cup stopping halfway to her lips, her face turning pale as chalk. "Kane...?" she gasped, her voice trembling. "What... how...?"
Kane did not answer her immediately. He stepped out into the gallery, his long stride smooth and deliberate.
Then, he turned back to the open doorway and extended a large, scar-etched hand inward.
A small, slender hand reached out and took his.
Harper stepped through the doors beside him.
She looked tired, her gray sweater slightly rumpled, but her eyes were bright, clear, and completely sane. There was no terror in her face, no claw marks on her skin, no frantic hyperventilation. She stood beside the terrifying Alpha King with effortless grace, her fingers loosely entwined with his.
Gideon let out a long, ragged breath, a sudden, blinding grin spreading across his scarred face.
Vivian’s coffee cup slipped from her fingers, smashing against the polished slate floor and splattering dark liquid across her expensive cream trousers.
"Impossible," Vivian whispered, her voice cracking. "That’s... that’s impossible! She’s a human-lineage weakling! What did you do to her? How is she standing?"
Kane turned his cold, amber gaze toward Vivian. The sudden, razor-sharp pressure of his focused Alpha authority slapped through the hallway, making Vivian instantly drop her eyes and stumble back half a step in pure instinctual submission.
"Miss Hayes completed the terms of the contract," Kane said, his deep voice smooth, velvety, and entirely devoid of the monstrous rasp. "She remained in my presence from midnight until dawn without hitches, without panic, and without hitting the button."

He looked down at Harper, his expression softening into something so fiercely possessive and tender that Gideon almost gasped.
"The three-million-dollar debt owed by Cascade is erased," Kane announced, his voice echoing down the long gallery corridor. "And their territory is now under the direct, permanent protection of the Royal Crown."
