Chapter 6 - Before the Dawn

The sky outside the massive glass windows was just beginning to shift from deep velvet night to a soft, slate-gray dawn when Kane’s eyes opened.
For the first time in five years, he did not wake up screaming. He did not wake up with his chest burning, his wolf clawing at the back of his eyes, or his room in splinters.
He woke up to absolute, pristine peace.
The constant, deafening static that usually filled his brain was quieted down to a distant, harmless hum. His body felt lighter, the unbearable tension in his muscles completely gone.
Then he felt the soft, rhythmic warmth pressed firmly against his chest.
Kane held his breath, his eyes widening as he looked down.
Harper was tucked under his arm, her cheek resting against his heart, her breath warm against his linen shirt. Her dark lashes rested pale against her cheeks, and one of her small hands was lightly gripping the fabric near his ribs. She was sound asleep, completely defenseless, entirely relaxed in the grip of a man who had terrified an entire continent.
Kane’s heart gave a strange, powerful thud.
His wolf, usually a savage, frantic beast tearing at his sanity, was curled up tightly inside his mind, radiating an overwhelming feeling of fierce, protective warmth. It didn't want to destroy her. It wanted to build a fortress around her and burn the world to ashes if anyone tried to hurt her.
Mate, the wolf whispered softly into his consciousness.
The word echoed through Kane’s mind like a silver bell. It wasn't a demand or a curse. It was a realization. The silver compound hadn't just shattered his mind; it had made his wolf hyper-sensitive, waiting for the exact, specific soul that possessed the calm, unshakeable strength needed to balance his storm.
The previous seven women hadn't failed because they were weak; they had failed because they were wrong. They had brought ambition, fear, and panic. Harper had brought peace.
Kane carefully moved his hand, his long, calloused fingers gently stroking her soft hair, taking care not to wake her.
Outside the heavy iron doors, he could hear the faint, muffled sounds of the morning shift arriving. Footsteps echoed in the long gallery corridor. Whispers were exchanged between the medical team and the guards.
They were waiting for the body. They were waiting for the screaming girl to be dragged out on a gurney.

A cold, razor-sharp smile touched Kane’s lips. The golden glow returned to his eyes, but this time, it was clear, focused, and entirely under his command.
"Sleep, little anchor," he murmured softly into her hair, kissing the crown of her head. "The game is over."
