Chapter 5 - The Eve of Execution

On the afternoon of the gala, Vanessa sent a final text message to my personal phone:

The house is officially transferred to my name. I've packed your remaining clothes into boxes at the front gate. Don't contact me again.

I didn't reply.

Instead, I sat in my private dressing room at the St. Jude Rehabilitation Annex, surrounded by Marcus, Elena, and two private security operatives assigned by my father’s trust estate.

Elena handed me a thick leather binder stamped with the seal of the State Supreme Court.

"The injunction was signed by Judge Miller thirty minutes ago," she said, her eyes flashing with quiet satisfaction. "It instantly freezes all transfers of Vale Robotics shares, revokes Adrian's signatory authority, and places Vanguard Capital under federal receivership."

"When does it take effect?" I asked, buttoning my crisp white dress shirt over the chest harness of the exoskeleton.

"The second you serve him publicly," Elena replied. "Under state corporate law, an injunction served in person during an active board or shareholder assembly immediately halts all proceedings."

Marcus finished tightening the micro-actuators around my calves, adjusting the wireless control unit built into my wristwatch.

"Battery is at one hundred percent," Marcus reported. "Neural sync rate is ninety-eight percent. The signal response time is down to four milliseconds—faster than a natural human reflex."

I adjusted my silk tie, pulling on a bespoke black tuxedo jacket designed with reinforced shoulders to conceal the upper harness. I stepped in front of the full-length mirror.

There was no trace of the pale, crushed man who had spent weeks staring at a hospital ceiling. My posture was straight, my shoulders square, my eyes fixed and deadly.

"Is the press team ready?" I asked Elena.

"Every major tech news outlet and financial journal in the state is in that ballroom," she said. "Adrian invited them to document his 'historic acquisition' of Vale Robotics."

I checked my watch. 7:45 PM. The banquet was scheduled to reach its climax at 8:30 PM with Adrian’s keynote address.

"Let's go," I said, walking toward the private elevator without a limp, without a cane, and without hesitation.
