Chapter 6 - The Lion's Den

The Grand Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt was packed with over five hundred guests. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over rows of round tables covered in white linen, fine crystal, and extravagant floral arrangements.

On the main stage, a massive LED screen displayed the combined logos of Vale Robotics and Vanguard Capital.

Vanessa sat at the head table directly in front of the stage, wearing a red backless gown that had cost fifteen thousand dollars from my personal account. Beside her sat Adrian, looking immaculate in a tailored tuxedo, sipping champagne and laughing with the city's key institutional investors.

"He looks entirely comfortable," Marcus whispered into my earpiece from the mobile monitoring unit in the parking garage. "He just signed the preliminary transfer agreement with the board members."

I stood in the darkened service corridor behind the stage, watching through the narrow glass slit of the double doors.

At 8:15 PM, Adrian stepped up to the podium. The crowd applauded enthusiastically as the ambient lights dimmed, focusing a bright white spotlight on him.

"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen," Adrian began, resting his hands smoothly on the sides of the podium. "Tonight is a night of transition. As many of you know, our brilliant founder, Daniel Vale, recently suffered a tragic, life-altering accident."

He lowered his head, feigning a look of deep, solemn grief.

"Daniel was a visionary," Adrian continued, his voice trembling with rehearsed emotion. "A brother to me. But his injuries have left him unable to meet the demanding burdens of leading a global technology company. It is with a heavy heart—and a deep sense of duty—that I announce Vanguard Capital's full acquisition of Vale Robotics to ensure our work continues uninterrupted."

Vanessa clapped loudly from her table, wiping away a fake tear for the camera crews positioned along the center aisle.

"Before we sign the final charter documents," Adrian said, smiling broadly at the cameras, "I would like to propose a toast to the future."

He raised his glass.

"To progress. To ambition. And to new beginnings."

"I wouldn't drink that just yet, Adrian," a voice echoed through the house speakers.
