Chapter 7 - The Standing Man

The entire ballroom went silent.

Adrian’s smile froze. Vanessa turned in her chair, her face draining of color.

The double doors at the side of the stage swung open.

I stepped out into the bright white beam of the spotlight.

A collective gasp rippled through the five hundred guests. Photographers instinctively raised their cameras, flashbulbs exploding like a firework display across the hall.

"Daniel?!" Vanessa shrieked, standing up so fast her chair fell backward onto the carpet. "What... how are you..."

I walked smoothly across the elevated wooden stage, my footsteps firm, steady, and echoing through the silent room. I didn't look at the crowd. I stared directly into Adrian's eyes.

Adrian staggered back two steps from the podium, his face turning an ash-gray color. His hand trembled violently, sending champagne splashing over the rim of his crystal glass before it shattered on the stage floor.

"You... you were paralyzed," Adrian stammered, his microphone picking up his ragged, panicked breath for the entire room to hear. "The doctors said your spine... the nerve damage..."

"Dr. Patel said recovery would take time," I said, reaching the center of the stage and taking the microphone from its stand. "He didn't say it was impossible. Especially when you have the technology you tried so hard to steal."

"This is an outrage!" Beatrice Vance, one of the board members loyal to Adrian, shouted from her table. "This is a private corporate meeting! Security, remove him!"

Two heavy security guards moved toward the stage stairs.

Elena Ruiz stepped out from the wings, holding a thick legal document high above her head. Behind her walked four uniformed officers from the State Police Financial Crimes Division.

"Touch him and you're interfering with a federal law enforcement action," Elena declared, her voice cutting through the hall with absolute authority. "I am Elena Ruiz, legal counsel for the Daniel Vale Trust. I am serving an emergency injunction halting all proceedings of this assembly."

The room descended into utter chaos. Reporters pushed past security ropes, flashing cameras furiously at Adrian, who was trapped against the LED display screen behind him.

I stepped closer to Adrian, towering over him as he cowered against the podium.

"You thought I was finished, Adrian," I said quietly, my voice amplified clearly across the room. "You thought you could crush my car, take my equity, and kiss my wife beside my wheelchair while I lay helpless under hospital blankets."
